When body cells begin to divide faster than normal cells, and begin spreading to surrounding tissues, it is called cancer.

The causes of cancer can be divided into two categories, one where the cause remains unknown and there are certain other causes, which are called preventable causes.

For example, consumption of smoking and alcohol increases the risk of cancer. Many lung cancers are detected due to smoking regularly.

As with all cancers, detecting lung cancer early can improve the outcomes of treatment.

According to studies, people who smoke ci******es have a 15 to 30 times greater risk of developing lung cancer and dying from it than non-smokers.

Additionally, second-hand smoke, occupational exposure to asbestos, air pollution, and a family history of lung cancer also increases the risk of lung cancer.

In India, one in every 28 women is diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. But, very little is said or done to raise awareness about breast cancer in men.

Yes, men can develop breast cancer too and it is not a disease of women only.

Men account for only 1% of all breast cancer cases in the world, although, the mortality rate is higher in men.

Seema’s oncologist asked her to get a biopsy and ultrasound done.
After 3-5 days she finally received her test results.

Seema gets her biopsy report and the news is not good.
She falls into the low risk category of Breast Cancer.
She couldn’t believe it, no one in her family has had cancer, she doesn’t drink or smoke either.

The doctor prescribes her more tests to know the stage of her cancer.
She says “ What we can do is look at the best possible treatment.
You have to see an Oncologist for that”.

After Seema found a lump in her breast, she couldn’t stop worrying. She went on several sites and learned all about the symptoms and risk factors of Breast Cancer.
Even though she didn’t have majority of the symptoms, she was not relieved.

She finally decided to see an Oncologist.

Doctor informed her to get a biopsy and sonomammography ( breast ultrasound ) done.

Here the doctor explained her what these tests are, how are they done, and what she can expect from it.

Last week, Seema found a lump in her breast, she was instantly worried what it could be. She went on the internet to learn about the symptoms of breast cancer.

Next day she woke up a bit early, her mind was restless. She went on in internet again and searched for risk factors of breast cancer.

Here’s what she found out :

▪️Personal history of having breast cancer
▪️Early menstrual activity
▪️History of hormone replacement therapy
▪️Smoking and alcohol consumption
▪️Exposure to radiation before age 30
▪️Lack of physical activity

She felt a little relieved as she didn’t check any of the above boxes.
But the question remained in her mind.

Seema is a 32 year old working woman. On a busy day, Seema was finishing up on a report with perfect concentration.

A meeting and two emails later she went to make lunch.

While setting the table she remembered about a lump she had noticed in the morning.

There was no pain at all but it felt heavy.
'Cancer?' She thought.

She tried to calm down, but it was impossible.
Next morning, after finishing up her meetings, she quickly went on the internet and searched for "lump in breast".

The results made her laptop slam shut.

Worried by the results, she looked for symptoms of breast cancer to check whether she's had any.

If the size of the tumour is small, the patient can choose to get only a part of the breast removed (lumpectomy), rather than having the complete breast removed (mastectomy).

This kind of breast conservation surgery helps the patient get back to feeling normal after a simpler reconstructive
surgery is performed.

Cycles of radiation are planned, in some cases, these are the basic treatment protocols which have been put in place for the treatment of breast cancer patients.
