Constipation is not just a digestive issue, but a heart concern too.
Constipation can alter the gut microbiota, leading to atherosclerosis, elevated blood pressure, and an increased risk of cardiovascular events. As people age, constipation becomes more common and frequently coincides with other cardiovascular risk factors. Additionally, straining during bowel movements can cause blood pressure spikes, potentially triggering cardiovascular issues like congestive heart failure, arrhythmias, acute coronary syndrome, and aortic dissection. However, since cardiovascular research often emphasizes more significant interventions, the risks associated with constipation may be overlooked.
