Had the pleasure of being invited last week to Max Hospital, Delhi to operate on a young, unmarried woman requiring a Robotic Scarless Thyroidectomy (RABIT).

It was wonderful reconnecting with Dr. Sriniket and Dr. Anadi after so long and reminiscing about the good old TMH days.

Robotic Left Radical Nephrectomy: A Safe and Effective Approach

I recently performed a robotic left radical nephrectomy for a patient with a left kidney mass. I used the DaVinci X System with straight line robotic ports and a single assisted port. This approach is minimally invasive and allows for precise dissection and removal of the kidney and surrounding tissue.

This pateint had an uneventful surgery and was discharged on POD 3. Final HPR was reported as Clear Cell RCC. The patient has made a full recovery and is back to work.

Robotic nephrectomy is a safe and effective treatment for kidney cancer. It is less invasive than traditional open surgery and offers many benefits, including:

-Less pain and scarring
-Shorter hospital stay
-Faster recovery time

Large Ovarian Tumor Excision.

This patient was admitted in the ICU with respiratory distress.

On evaluation there was a large complex solid-cystic abdominal mass (likely ovarian) around 30 x 25 cms along with bilateral pleural effusion.

Many of these very large ovarian tumours that are long standing are usually non-cancerous. Nevertheless, they can lead to problems due to mass effect and always have the potential of harbouring malignancy/or tumor spread which is known only during the surgery or final histopathology report.

It’s essential that the surgery is pre- planned accordingly, to address these aspects and to avoid incomplete treatment.

This particular patient did well after surgery and was discharged on the 4th post operative day.

World Cancer Day.

Had the opportunity to address a gathering of doctors, nurses, paramedics, patients, cancer survivors, care-givers and social entrepreneurs on Feb 4th at AIG Hospitals, Hyderabad

Some of them had just heard the word cancer and some had lived and experienced it.

The message was simple- Everyone has their own role to play in society, to make cancer more acceptable and to bridge the gap that exists both in terms of knowledge and access to quality care.

Had a good time interacting with students from VIT and volunteers from the FEPSI NGO. It was an interactive session with lots of questions about the future of cancer care and how emerging technology is being leveraged to give patients the best treatment possible.

There was also a discussion about the often ignored topic - The effect on mental health and the general apathy towards life that most patients face when they hear the word “cancer”. A lot can be done with patient support systems and empowering them with the right knowledge.

Lastly the question that’s often asked- how to prevent cancer?

Preventive vaccination, healthy habits and screening tests.
Information on this is easily available but often ignored.
