Govt of India plan to have preferential policy to support indigenous manufacturers of medical devices :

All countries — like Malaysia, Uganda, Jordan and China provide 15 per cent (or even higher) price preference in public health procurement to medical devices made in their own country. This means that all technical parameters remaining the same, they will opt for a device that is made in their own country as long as it is not priced 15 per cent higher than the competing imported devices.

India has a huge import dependency in medical devices, to the tune of over ₹25,000 crore, which translates to over 70 per cent general import dependency and 90 per cent in electronic medical devices.

Congratulations Prof Jha for being elected as next president of International Society of Nephrology.

The International Society of Nephrology (ISN) has elected Prof Vivekanand Jha, Executive Director of the George Institute for Global Health, India and former professor of nephrology at the Postgraduate Institute for Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh, as President of the Society from 2019 to 2021.

During his presidency, Prof Jha wants to focus on consolidating the ongoing ISN programs and the initiatives already started by the leadership e.g. the Oby25, the ISN CKD closing the gaps and the equitable renal replacement therapy initiative, and on ensuring that the output from these programs are integrated into all the ISN activities.

“The ISN has contributed much to capacity building and practice and research and nephrology in the developing world,” says Prof Jha. “I speak from personal experience having been a direct beneficiary as a past ISN fellow and a participant of the Renal Sister centre program.”

Over time, Prof Jha has been a member of the several ISN committees, task forces, councils and the Executive Committee. “I have participated and enjoyed the democratic functioning of the ISN,” he says, adding: “I have been fortunate to have contributed to the ISN mission through participation in various ISN committees, especially as the Chair of the Education Committee."
