Understanding Risk Factors: Knowledge is Power

Breast cancer doesn’t discriminate, but knowing the risk factors can help you take charge of your health. Awareness today can save lives tomorrow.

Common risk factors include:
🔹 Age & Gender: Women over 40 are at higher risk, though younger women can also be affected.
🔹 Family History & Genetics: Having close relatives with breast cancer or genetic mutations (BRCA1/BRCA2) increases risk.
🔹 Hormonal Factors: Early menstruation, late menopause, or prolonged exposure to estrogen can contribute.
🔹 Lifestyle Factors: Lack of exercise, unhealthy diet, alcohol consumption, and obesity can increase vulnerability.
🔹 Previous Breast Conditions: Certain benign breast lumps or history of breast cancer raise the likelihood.
🔹 Radiation Exposure: Prior radiation treatment to the chest area.

Remember: Having one or more risk factors does not mean you will develop breast cancer, but awareness can guide preventive action.

World Hospice and Palliative Care Day 2025 The Department of Pain and Palliative Medicine at Basavatarakam Indo American Cancer Hospital & Research Institute marked World Hospice and Palliative Care Day 2025 with a focused program built around the global theme: “Achieving the Promise: Universal Access to Palliative Care.”

The event brought together key institutional leaders and invited experts, including: • Dr. Gayatri Palat – Chief Guest • Dr. T. Subramanyeshwar Rao – Medical Director • Dr. Kalpana Raghunath – Associate Director -Academics • Dr. Phanikoteshwar Rao – Medical Superintendent • Dr. Basanth Kumar – Head, Oncoanesthesia & Palliative Medicine • Mr. Sunil Tandon – Chief Operating Officer.

Dr. Gayatri Palat delivered the keynote address, outlining the need for community-based care models, interdisciplinary collaboration, and capacity building to improve access to palliative care across Telangana. She acknowledged the department’s ongoing efforts and emphasized the importance of sustained, system-level improvements.

The program also featured a panel discussion on “Transition from Oncology to Palliative Care: Barriers and Facilitators,” moderated by Dr. Praveen Kumar and Dr. Pallavi Ghosh. Panelists included Dr. Dileep Gudipudi, Dr. Rajagopalan R., Dr. Rakesh Pinninti, Dr. Pavan Kumar and Dr. Arumugam . The discussion addressed early referral challenges, communication gaps, and the need for institutional and policy-level integration.

A role-play session demonstrated practical approaches to sensitive communication, focusing on two scenarios: “Breaking Bad News” and “Dealing with an Angry Patient.” These sessions highlighted the communication demands faced by healthcare professionals in emotionally complex situations.

The event concluded with closing remarks and acknowledgments by Dr. Praveen Kumar.
