Today is Rathasapthami and from today Season starts changing with the approaching Summer as the Sun Shines brighter and increasing the temperatures . Konark ,Arisavelli, Modhera temples are some famous temples of Sun and are also refered to as Arka Theertha.
On Rathasaptami day the significant plant is the most common found on roadside/waste lands-Arka/Akavan/jilledu/Calotropis procera/gigantum which is said to represent Sun. 7 leaves of Arka are placed on the body 1-head 2-shoulders 2- knees2-feet representing 7horses of chariot of Sun and bath is taken.These seven represent 7 colours of Rainbow which merge to form one colour Aruna and most importantly the major 7 Vices of Mind Icha,Moha, Mada, Matsarya, Irshya, Lobha,Kopa, which has to be controlled by the Charioteer or Mind to be attained by Sadhana and Arogya which is SunGod or source to lead towards Fulfillment of Lifes goal that is Moksha. This is the Significance of Ratha sapthami.

The wood of Arka is used as samidha in yagna /homa.
The plant though poisonous has many medical uses .Only few uses I am mentioning here which are safe to use:-
# Two tiny leaves mixed with jaggery taken on sunday morning at sunrise cures a type of headache. -suryavartha a type of migrane which increases as the day progresses.
# Leaf smeared with oil and heated slightly and tied on the ankle reduces the anklepain /calcanium spur.
# A specific med named Arka Lavan is prepared which is useful in digestive disorders and liver diseases.
# Leaves mixed with jaggery given for 3 days on empty stomach cures jaundice.
# The plant when placed tied in a gunny bag at the entrance of a water canal to a field reduces w**d production.
# The plant is said to contain mercury metal which again is a representative of Sun. Surya Namaskar a compilation of 7 Yogic postures done with reciting the Surya mantra is the Ultimate of Yogasana for the seekers of Good health as it is said "आरोग्यं भास्कराद इच्चेद and it is also said "सर्वमेव परित्याज्य शरीरमनुपालयेद" that is excluding everything else Body should be taken care of as without this physical body of ours we do not exist and all the Rat Race of ours also will not exist so friends take care of your body when there is still time.
