We are delighted to announce the publication of “Transitioning to midwifery models of care: lessons from case studies in India” in Global Health Action, authored by Paridhi Jha, Bharati Sharma, Alison McFadden, Sowmya Thota, Joyce Marshall, Neha Singh, Sowmya Ramesh, Jitender Nagpal, and Andrew Symon.✨

🗒️Drawing on case studies from Gujarat and Telangana, the paper highlights the opportunities and challenges in integrating midwives into India’s health system. Findings show that while midwives are recognised as experts in normal birth, barriers such as professional rivalry, unclear legal frameworks, and uneven institutional support remain.

The study underscores the need for mentorship, sensitisation of healthcare teams, policy backing, and community recognition to strengthen midwifery-led care in India.💛

💛 In Episode 8, our Season finale, we are proud to present Peter Leslie Martin, Director on the Board of Fernandez Foundation. Born in Hyderabad but brought up in Bombay, he decided after a stint abroad to return to his roots in 1983 and became an integral part of Fernandez. He was one of the key managers working alongside Dr Evita in helping develop and raise the organisation to its present stature of repute. An ebullient and caring mentor, Mr Martin is held in high regard by all levels of the Fernandez family.

We are proud to share a new study in the Women, Midwives and Midwifery journal by Sowmya Thota, Dr Radha Reddy, Inderjeet Kaur, Siobhan Loughnan, Rupesh Gautam, and G Murali Mohan Reddy. This study examined the impact of COVID-19 on expectant mothers. While most women were able to keep up with their check-ups, the pandemic took a heavy toll on their mental health:

* 44% reported high anxiety
* 52% showed signs of depression
* 91% felt stressed
* 82% experienced loneliness

Domestic violence also rose during lockdown, even as many women felt closer to their families. The study demonstrates the importance of integrating routine mental health screening and support into antenatal care, as it is crucial for improving maternal well-being and ensuring resilient maternity services during public health emergencies.

Because caring for mothers means caring for the next generation.

Our Story

“In June, 1948, a young couple, Leslie and Lourdes Fernandez, started a clinic with two beds.

From these humble beginnings, it grew over the years to 40 beds, at which point they handed over the reins of the hospital to their daughter, Dr. Evita Fernandez. In 1992, the old structures were razed to the ground. On February 12, 1993, the 75th birthday of Dr. Lourdes, she and Dr. Leslie jointly laid the foundation stone of the present building at Bogulkunta, which was inaugurated on August 25, 1996. On January 8, 2011 a second hospital, dedicated to high risk mothers and babies, was opened at Hyderguda. The two hospitals together with the new Stork Home unit at Banjara Hills have a combined strength of 320 beds, offering the latest technology and expertise.”
