Dr. Adarsh Annapareddy

Dr. Adarsh Annapareddy I am an Orthopaedic Surgeon &
Executive Director at Sunshine Hospitals, Hyderabad with a specialization in Arthroplasty (the field of joint replacements).

My main areas of expertise are total knee replacements, partial knee replacements, total hip replacements, and ROBOTIC joint replacements. I have successfully performed more than 750 joint replacement surgeries (both hip and knee) so far. I am one of the handful of surgeons in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh that perform partial knee replacement, which is a bone preserving surgery and ensures better

outcomes for patients who suffer from arthritis. I am also one of the few surgeons in India trained and certified to perform Robotic Assisted Joint Replacement Surgery for both, hip and knee. Sunshine Hospitals is the first hospital in India to have successfully completed 300 robot-assisted joint replacement surgeries. We achieved this feat faster than any other center in the world. I am proud to be a part of this technological revolution, which assures better accuracy during surgery and far better patient outcomes. When I am not attending to my patients, I am watching movies, listening to music, hanging out with my family, or following cricket. I believe in making the most out of life and exploring everything – after all, we have only 1 chance to do so!

Wondering when a joint replacement surgery becomes necessary?

In this video, I discuss how Orthopaedic surgeons determine whether or not you're in Stage 4 (the stage which requires for a joint to be operated on).

Harsh*ta, one of the beneficiaries of the Sarvejana Foundation’s Happyknees initiative, has found a new shot at life through invaluable contributions from donors.

Hers is her story of resilience and determination that reflects her character. She approached us barely able to walk due to a severe case of Avascular Necrosis of the hip. We’re glad to share that she’s made a full recovery since and is even able to play with her child, which seemed impossible a few months ago. Her story is truly inspirational and I’m amazed to see what a fighter she is!

On my flight back from Brisbane to Hyderabad via Singapore after my conference a few weeks ago, a very interesting incident occured.

It was night-time and just as I was preparing to sleep, there was an announcement on the flight asking if there was a doctor onboard. I responded and the air steward took me to a seat at the back of the flight. An elderly Australian man was gasping for breath and was very drowsy and non-responsive to commands. For the next one hour, myself along with the help of a nurse practitioner (who was also a passenger onboard), stayed by his side and with the limited resources that we had, managed to keep him safe and alive.

It was, of course, my duty to help out a fellow passenger and I'm glad that we managed to keep him going until the flight landed but I was very pleasantly surprised to see this email a week later in my inbox.

It feels good to have this kind of appreciation when we put our foot forward to help our fellow human beings.

Mrs. P was suffering from severe arthritis of her knee joints and came to me in a wheelchair almost in tears from the pain.

We replaced both of her knees and the surgery went well.
It was a very severe case of arthritis but she had a wonderful relief and this is her walking within one month.

What I admire about her is her fighting spirit! When she came, she was in tears. But from the very next day of the surgery, her attitude was so positive. She was always smiling and enthusiastic to recover fast. I'm glad to see her up on her feet and very comfortable with her new knees.

There’s a lot of ambiguity surrounding the profession of an Orthopaedic surgeon. I often get a lot of questions about what my work entails and my responsibilities.

So I decided to talk a bit about what my daily work entails.

Last week, I was one of the surgeons selected from the Indian delegation at the Asia Pacific Meeting for Stryker Mako Robot Surgeons in Brisbane - the meeting included surgeons from India, China, Japan, Korea and Australia as well as visiting surgeons from the UK and US.

We had an opportunity to present our work that we're doing at Sunshine Bone & Joint Institute and got to interact with legends of robotic surgery, like Professor Fares Haddad from UK and Drs. Gavin Clark and Bill Donnelly from Australia.

Ot was also a pleasure to travel with our Indian colleagues- we had a great time taking a breather from our hectic work schedule and had a chance to socialise in Brisbane more than we can even back in India.

Mrs. S is the mother of our driver, Guru, who has been with us for over 18 years. When he approached us, expressing concern that his mother could hardly walk due to knee pain, we recollected his unwavering loyalty and dedication over the many years of service to us, as far back as my MBBS days. We went ahead and replaced both her knees and sponsored the whole procedure and implants as a small token of appreciation for his service.

Mrs. S's resilience was remarkable; she was so comfortable that she did not require a follow-up visit for 6 months, and we had to reach out to her to come in and show us her progress.

She has since resumed her daily activities with remarkable efficiency. It's incredibly fulfilling to be able to help out people who have helped us out in any small way!

Some moments truly touch our hearts like the unexpected sweet gesture from a patient's son last week.

Last week, I was out for dinner with Dad and a couple of colleagues and as we were about to pay the bill, the waiter came up to me and handed over a paid receipt as well as a letter, saying that the gentleman who was sitting on the other table asked to pay our bill. When I looked around, he wasn't there. This is a beautiful letter that he had written for me.

"Hello Dr Adarsh,

Thanks for treating and operating my mother last year.

This is a gratitude and token of appreciation for all the great work you have done.”

It's moments like these which give us the impetus to keep doing our best for our patients.

Last weekend, I had the opportunity and pleasure of being invited to the Meril Manufacturing and Academic Centre in Vapi, Gujarat for the unveiling of India's first indigenous, completely made-in-India, robot for joint-replacement - the Misso.
I felt extremely proud to witness what could be achieved by our own engineers and entrepreneurs.

In the same event, I got a chance to go to the factory to see how implants that we put into patients are manufactured (also with the help of robots) - as you can see in one of the videos the implant getting the final polishing done with the help of the robotic arm.

We really are taking great strides to usher in a new tomorrow today!

Surgery is one part of the treatment process but physiotherapy is just as important. After a successful operation, the patient needs to do his bit to get back to full fitness. In this video, I talk about how a patient can regain mobility post-operation through physiotherapy.
