Very important message for those who eat ' low sodium salts'. Dr. Vijay kiran.

●Low-sodium salts, marketed as healthier alternatives, replace sodium with potassium to maintain flavor.
●While beneficial for reducing sodium intake, these salts pose risks for patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and those on hypertension medications like telmisartan.
●CKD impairs the kidneys' ability to excrete potassium, leading to hyperkalemia—a condition where elevated potassium levels can cause muscle weakness, irregular heart rhythms, or even cardiac arrest.
●Telmisartan, an angiotensin receptor blocker, further increases potassium retention, amplifying this risk.
●For these patients, consuming potassium-rich low-sodium salts can exacerbate hyperkalemia, especially if dietary potassium from foods like bananas or spinach is also high.
●Patients should consult healthcare providers before using low-sodium salts, monitor potassium levels regularly, and consider alternative sodium reduction strategies, such as herbs or spices.

India faces a silent crisis in kidney care.

Each year, over 2.2 lakh (220,000) new patients are diagnosed with end-stage renal disease, adding to the already massive pool of individuals dependent on dialysis for survival🩺.

Despite this, only about 7,500 kidney transplants are performed annually-a number that barely scratches the surface of the true need.

Dialysis, while life-sustaining, is not a cure. Mortality rates remain high: studies show that nearly 28% of Indian dialysis patients die within just 10 months of starting treatment💔.

Limited access to transplants, long waiting times, and low rates of organ donation mean that the vast majority must continue on dialysis, with many succumbing to complications or dying while waiting for a suitable donor.

The stark reality is that for every patient who receives a transplant, dozens remain on the waiting list or are lost to the disease. This mismatch highlights the urgent need for greater awareness, improved infrastructure, and stronger policies to promote organ donation in India🙏. Bridging this gap could save thousands of lives and offer hope to families across the nation.

Kidney Disease: A Silent Equalizer 🩺💔

Kidney disease spares no one—it affects everyone, from millionaires to the common man, regardless of religion, gender, or social status. 🌍✨ This silent condition often progresses unnoticed until it’s too late, making awareness and prevention critical.

Risk Factors to Watch Out For:
- Diabetes: High blood sugar damages kidney filters over time.
- High Blood Pressure: Strains kidney blood vessels, leading to damage.
- Obesity: Increases the risk of diabetes and hypertension.
- Family History: A genetic predisposition can heighten your risk.
- Age: Risk increases as you grow older.
- Lifestyle Choices: Smoking, excessive alcohol, and overuse of painkillers can harm kidneys.

💡 Remember: Early detection is key! Regular screenings through blood and urine tests can save lives by catching kidney disease in its early stages.

Take charge of your health today—manage your weight, eat a balanced diet, stay active, and control your blood sugar and blood pressure. Prevention is always better than cure! 🚶‍♂️🍎

Let’s break the silence around kidney disease and spread awareness for a healthier tomorrow. 💪💚

As a kidney doctor, I see daily 50 to 60 patients with kidney failure, many in end-stage renal disease, a stage where dialysis has to be started.

Dialysis is an option for them to sustain life. Yet, many resist and have an undue phobia for dialysis. It saves lives—it's your friend, not enemy.
Many are willing to die rather than get dialysis done. Let’s break the myths and embrace the truth! 💡

Dialysis is not your enemy—it’s your friend. It steps in when your kidneys can no longer filter waste and toxins from your blood, keeping you alive and improving your quality of life. While it requires commitment, many patients go on to lead productive and fulfilling lives with dialysis. 🌟

Understandably, the idea of being connected to a machine can feel overwhelming. But remember: dialysis doesn’t define you; it empowers you to continue living. Whether it’s hemodialysis at a center or peritoneal dialysis at home, there are options tailored to your lifestyle. 🏠💉

Choosing dialysis is choosing life. Without it, toxins build up in the body, leading to severe complications and ultimately death. While some may prefer palliative care over dialysis due to personal or medical reasons, for most ESRD patients, dialysis offers hope and a chance to thrive. 💪

Let’s replace fear with facts and stigma with support. 💙

To***co is a significant risk factor for both kidney and bladder cancers, with substantial statistics supporting this claim.

Bladder Cancer

- Attributable Risk: Approximately 50-65% of bladder cancers in men and 20-30% in women are attributable to smoking[7]. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) estimates that smoking accounts for 66% of bladder cancers in men and 30% in women[1].

- Increased Risk: Smokers are about three to four times more likely to develop bladder cancer compared to non-smokers[8][6]. A meta-analysis found that current smokers have a 3-fold increased risk of developing bladder cancer relative to non-smokers[7].

- Global Impact: Globally, smoking is responsible for approximately 36.8% of disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) lost due to bladder cancer, with higher rates in males (43.7%) compared to females (15.2%)[3].

Kidney Cancer

- Increased Risk: Smoking increases the risk of kidney cancer by about 1.39 times compared to non-smokers[1]. A meta-analysis indicated that the risk of renal cell carcinoma rises with smoking intensity and duration, even with low levels of consumption[1].

- Long-term Effects: The risk of developing kidney cancer increases significantly with the number of years spent smoking and the quantity smoked daily[5].
