We recently addressed a mixed group of girls in a Government school and were talking about Periods and Puberty. The girls, 𝐚𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐬 9 𝐨𝐫 10 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐨𝐥𝐝, 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐝𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐰, and here in this school, they are not even aware of what periods are and how it will change their bodies.
Upon further questioning, I realized the girls weren't taught anything about it because they would read about reproductive organs in the 8th standard... which is very, very late.
If the body's growth rate has changed, so should the teachings be as well. We should really, with time, update our educational curriculum to introduce these vital topics at a younger age. Ensuring that girls are informed and prepared for these changes is crucial for their health and confidence.
According to a few online shares, around70% 𝐨𝐟 𝐠𝐢𝐫𝐥𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐮𝐧𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐝𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐢𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞.
By equipping young girls with the knowledge they need about their bodies, we empower them to manage their menstrual health sustainably and confidently.
What do you think about early introduction of Puberty and Periods in the schools? How should we tackle this situation while the education system is yet to catch up with the changes?
