Blueberry (Jamun) is a healthy Indian summer fruit. The fruit is sweet, sour and astringent in taste and can give a purplish color to your tongue. Eating Jamun fruit is the best way to obtain its maximum health benefits.

It is rich in iron, vitamin A and vitamin C and is beneficial for maintaining overall health of eye and skin. Jamun is one of the richest source of antioxidants and is fully loaded with flavonoids that is essential for complete health. It contains various chemical compounds like oxalic acid, gallic acid etc. which makes this fruit capable of fighting against malaria and various other microbial and bacterial infections.

Jamun helps in weight loss as it promotes digestion as well as removes excessive fat easily from the body. It is also found to be effective in chronic diarrhea due to its astringent property. Jamun also helps provide relief from gas or flatulence due to its carminative property.

Jamun helps manage skin associated problems such as skin allergy, rashes and redness due to its strong healing activity. The pulp of Jamun fruit can be applied to get relief from inflammation due to its anti-inflammatory property.

It is advisable to avoid the consumption of Jamun as it may cause constipation due to its absorbent property. It is also important to monitor your blood sugar level regularly while using Jamun seed powder if you are taking anti-diabetic drugs as it can cause a sudden dip in sugar levels.

METABOLIC CHANGES IN PATIENTS WITH LUPUS LINKED TO VITAMIN D DEFICIENCY

The findings of a new study reveal that patients with lupus are more likely to have metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance, which are both the factors linked to heart disease if they have lower vitamin D levels.

An international research team, led by experts at the University of Birmingham and the University of Manchester, studied vitamin D levels in 1,163 SLE patients across 33 centres in 11 countries (UK, USA, Canada, Spain, The Netherlands, Sweden, Iceland, Switzerland, Turkey, South Korea and Mexico), publishing its findings in Rheumatology.

Researchers believe that boosting vitamin D levels may improve control of these cardiovascular risk factors, as well as improving long-term outcomes for patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).

Given that photosensitivity is a key feature of SLE, scientists say that a combination of avoiding the sun, using high-factor sunblock, and living in more northerly countries may contribute to lower levels of vitamin D in lupus patients.

Report co-author Dr John A Reynolds, Clinical Senior Lecturer in Rheumatology at the University of Birmingham, commented: “Our results suggest that co-existing physiological abnormalities may contribute to long-term cardiovascular risk early on in SLE. We found a link between lower levels of vitamin D and metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance. Further studies could confirm whether restoring vitamin D levels helps to reduce these cardiovascular risk factors and improve quality of life for patients with lupus.”

Lupus is an uncommon incurable immune system illness, more common in women, where the immune system is overactive, causing inflammation anywhere in the body.

Metabolic syndrome is a combination of diabetes, high blood pressure (hypertension), abnormal cholesterol levels, and obesity.

The researchers note that patients with SLE have an excess cardiovascular risk, up to 50 times that seen in people without the condition - this cannot be attributed to traditional cardiovascular risk factors, such as high blood pressure or smoking, alone.
