What really happens to your kidneys when you smoke?

Iโ€™m Dr. Kamal Kiran, MD, DNB (Nephrologist), and hereโ€™s the truth:
Smoking and ni****ne directly reduce blood supply to your kidneys, cause scarring, increase blood pressure, and slowly destroy the kidneyโ€™s auto-regulation system.

Your kidneys are not designed to handle cigarette smoke.
The damage starts silently, until itโ€™s too late.

Quit before itโ€™s too late. In fact, never start at all.
Because if you take care of your kidneys, your kidneys will always take care of you.

High uric acid can silently damage your kidneys.
Iโ€™m Dr. Kamal Kiran, Kidney Specialist & Transplant Physician.

Excess uric acid โ†’ hard for kidneys to excrete โ†’ crystals form โ†’ kidney stones.
Acidic urine + purine-rich diet (red meat, alcohol, certain drinks) โ†’ increases stone risk.
Prevention tip: Control uric acid + Stay hydrated = protect your kidneys.

Take care of your kidneys, and they will take care of you.

Does alcohol affect uric acid? Absolutely.
Iโ€™m Dr. Kamal Kiran, Kidney Specialist & Transplant Physician.

Beers, wine, toddy โ†’ contain purines & oxalates โ†’ raise uric acid.
Whisky & other IMFLs in excess โ†’ also spike uric acid.
High uric acid = joint pain, gout, kidney damage, heart risk.

Takeaway: Alcohol in moderation. Excess is harmful not only for the liver, but also for the kidneys through uric acid buildup.

Protect your kidneys, and they will protect you for life.

Have you heard of uric acid and how dangerous it can be?
Iโ€™m Dr. Kamal Kiran, Kidney Specialist & Transplant Physician.

Uric acid is a waste product, but if it stays high for long:

It can cause gout (severe joint pain).
It can deposit under the skin, causing complications.
It can coat blood vessels, leading to aneurysms that may rupture.
It can increase the risk of heart failure.
It can directly damage the kidneys.

Thatโ€™s why monitoring and controlling uric acid is crucial.
If you take care of your kidneys, your kidneys will always take care of you.

Your sugar levels may look normal, but thatโ€™s not the full story. Regular monitoring with glucometer, HbA1c tests, and kidney checkups are essential for diabetes management. Remember โ€“ healthy kidneys mean a healthier you.

Sudden drop in sugar levels is not always a good sign!
Dr. Kamal Kiran, MD, DNB (Nephrologist), explains how kidney damage can affect insulin breakdown. When kidneys fail to clear insulin, it stays longer in the body โ€” leading to low sugar readings.

If your sugars are normal without any change in medicines, diet, or exercise, it may be a red flag. Always get your kidneys checked early.

Remember: If you take care of your kidneys, your kidneys will always take care of you.

Many believe drinking lots of water alone prevents kidney stones. While true for 85โ€“90% of people, 10โ€“15% still develop stones despite it. Why?
High calcium in urine/blood
High uric acid
Low citrate levels

Your kidneys are just 1% of your body weight but receive 25% of your blood supply โ€” making them prone to stone formation.

With simple 24-hour urine and blood tests, we can identify the exact cause and treat it early to prevent recurring stones. Donโ€™t just rely on waterโ€”find the root cause.

A 28-year-old man came for a job check-upโ€”perfectly healthy, but protein was found in his urine. That small sign meant early kidney damage. A simple biopsy could have diagnosed and reversed it. But fear kept him away. Three years later, he returned with complete kidney failure needing dialysis or transplant.

๐Ÿ’ก Lesson: Donโ€™t fear the treatmentโ€”fear the disease. Early diagnosis saves lives.

A young pregnant woman developed high blood pressure (PIH) during pregnancy. Normally, it should be monitored and managed, but she ignored it for years. Seven years later, she returned with severely shrunken kidneys, blood pressure above 200, and eye damage from grade 3 hypertensive changes.
One small mistakeโ€”not checking her BP regularlyโ€”led to irreversible kidney failure and the need for dialysis.
Your takeaway: Always monitor your blood pressure. It could save your kidneys and your life.
