You’re not behind. You’re just caught in the availability trap. Where the loudest, glossiest parts of other people’s lives get front-row seats in your mind. Scroll long enough, and your brain starts to believe that promotions, proposals, and perfect skin are the default, and that your quiet, messy, in-progress life is some kind of failure. But what’s available to your feed isn’t the full picture. It’s a highlight reel, not a census. Be kind to the version of you that’s building a life off-screen. That’s the one that’s real.

Lately I’ve been realising how much I pick up without meaning to. Other people’s moods. Their expectations. The unspoken pressure to hold it all together. It’s subtle, this slow weight. And I’ve started asking, more often now: Is this mine? Not everything that feels heavy belongs to me. Some things can be left where they are. Some things were never mine to begin with.

Before phones, before plans, before we knew what the word urgent meant, there was this. A red ladder. A tree that knew all our secrets. A house too small for grown-ups and just right for dreams. We didn’t climb for the view; we climbed because that’s where the summer lived. The signal was bad, but the stories were good. And somehow, even now, part of us is still up there, barefoot, beaming, and believing that everything would last forever.

This International Self-Care Day, gift yourself an evening that asks nothing of you. Your own company isn’t something to get through. It’s something to come home to.

Here’s our gentle how-to on being with yourself, by yourself, for yourself. No pressure. Just presence.

There’s a version of me I carry into rooms. One that knows what to say, when to laugh, how to look like I belong. It’s practiced, polished, presentable. But sometimes I wonder, if no one was watching, who would I be? Would I still sit up straight? Would I still measure my words? Would I still feel the pressure to be useful, delightful, fine? Maybe I’ve worn the costume so long I’ve forgotten what my own skin feels like. Maybe rest isn’t just sleep, maybe it’s the moment I can stop performing. Even just for myself.

There’s a quiet kind of beauty in things that don’t last. A sandcastle. A summer evening. A deep breath after a hard conversation. We pour care into them anyway, not because they’ll stay, but because they mattered while they were here. A reminder, that not everything has to be permanent to be precious.

Believe in the ocean. Even if all you’ve ever known is a cup passed down with caution. The vastness isn’t a lie. It’s freedom learning your name. And you’re allowed to answer.

A reminder that some forms of connection can’t be downloaded or streamed. They have to be felt. Beyond screens, there’s this. And it’s enough.
