What a healthy weight loss looks like
So we had a 27 yr hypertensive male who came for consultation last evening. He used to always accompany his wife n mother when they came for their consultation. Like it's always better to get the family involved in the consultation, we used to feel glad...
So this time when he called for his mother's follow up appt, he asked if he could get an appt for himself too... was happy that during the previous consultations we could make a difference in his mindset too n could help him a bit in improving his diet n lifestyle, if at all he might require rectification...
Now when he came yesterday, upon probing deep as why he really wanted to have a consultation, he revealed he wanted to lose weight. To our dismair he always looked like someone who was gd built...
When we did his body composition analysis, it showed fat percentage slightly higher than permitted ... so we started counselling him as to how we'll work on lowering his body fat n preserve his lean mass... but he was adamant he wanted to lose weight n that while he was coming along with his wife n mother, he was already consulting a Dietician who helped him lose around 20 kgs.
This came as a further shock because as mentioned earlier, he never looked like a person who required to lose weight, may be just little modifications here and there...
Upon getting a chance to have a glance at the diet plan given, it was a classical example of very low calorie crash diet, which resulted in muscle loss n hence the rapid weight loss... body composition was never done. Just weight being monitored n the poor ignorant client used to feel happy that he reduced to 80 kg from 100 kg in a span of 3 months.
It took us a while to make him understand the what he had lost. He realised his mistake of not introspecting on himself what he was doing to his body even while he used to accompany his wife n mother.
Also it was revealed that he consulted the previous dietician just because her appointments were difficult to get (He assumed that the difficult it is to get an appt, the more knowledgeable the dietician is...!!!) and that his father's friend lost 40 kg with her help in 4 months...
Messages we as a team want to put across-
1. Remember it is the excessive fat n visceral fat that needs to be shed and not total body weight.
2. Just because someone is famous doesn't mean he/she is good in their work
3. Always always check the credentials of the person who you are putting your health reigns into... don't blindly consult someone just because someone in your known circle has lost weight with them...
Best wishes
