Dr. Sumeet Agrawal | First 15 Days Care After Retinal Detachment Surgery
👁️ After retinal detachment surgery, the first 15 days are extremely important for proper healing.
Dr. Sumeet Agrawal shares the correct method of eye cleaning, posture, and protection to follow at home.
🔹 🧼 How to clean your eye safely
Use:
RO water or clean chilled water
Sterile wipes / sterile cotton pads
Method:
✔️ Clean gently, starting from inner corner → outward
✔️ Do not press or rub the eye
✔️ If the eye feels sticky, warm water compress (lukewarm only) may be used as advised
✔️ Follow the cleaning frequency recommended in your discharge card
🔹 💧 Use your prescribed eye drops
Follow the exact schedule mentioned in your discharge summary
Wash hands before applying drops
Maintain at least 5–10 minutes gap between different drops
Do not skip doses
🔹 😎 Protect your operated eye
Wear dark protective glasses during the day
Use eye shield at night if advised
Avoid dust, smoke, water splash, or makeup near the eye
🔹 🛌 Sleeping posture matters
Your surgeon will tell you the exact posture based on your case (oil/gas placement).
Common instructions include:
Side-wise sleeping (right or left as advised)
Head-elevated / leg-raised positions
Avoid sleeping on your stomach
Maintain posture for most of the day in the first week
🔹 🚫 Things to Avoid
Rubbing or pressing the eye
Heavy lifting, bending forward suddenly
Driving until cleared
Mobile/laptop strain (limit usage)
The correct cleaning technique and proper posture in the first 15 days help support the retina and promote stable healing.
Always follow the instructions given in your discharge card and attend all follow-up visits.
