Wisdom teeth are the third and final set of molars that most people get in their late teens or early twenties. Sometimes these teeth can be a valuable asset to the mouth when healthy and properly aligned, but more often, they are misaligned and require removal.
Most people have four wisdom teeth — two on the top and two on the bottom. When wisdom teeth become impacted, they don't have enough room to emerge or develop in the usual way. Impacted wisdom teeth can cause pain, damage other teeth and lead to other dental problems. Sometimes they don't cause any problems. But because wisdom teeth are hard to clean, they may be more prone to tooth decay and gum disease than other teeth.
The most common treatment is wisdom teeth removal. A dentist or oral surgeon usually does this procedure at their clinic while you’re under sedation. People of any age can have their wisdom teeth removed. Unlike other teeth, wisdom teeth don’t provide a lot of biting or chewing power. So, there’s no need to replace them once a provider removes them.
