षष्ठिकान् शालि मुद्गान् सेन्धवामलक यवान् अन्तरीक्षं पयः सर्पि जाङ्गलं मधुचाभ्यसेत् ।। तच्च नित्यं प्रयुञ्जीत स्वास्थ्यं येनानुवर्तते। अजातानां विकाराणां अनुत्पत्तिकरं च यत्।। (च.सू.५/१२)
साठी शालि चावल, मूंग, सैन्धव लवण, आंवला, यव, अन्तरीक्ष जल, दुग्ध, घृत, जाङ्गल मांस, शहद इनका नित्य सेवन करना चाहिए क्योंकि इनका नित्य सेवन करने से स्वास्थ्य का अनुवर्तन होता है एवं आने वाली व्याधियों की उत्पत्ति नहीं होती है
According to aacharya Caraka food like Red rice, green gram(Pulse), rock salt(Halite), Indian gooseberry, barley, rain water, milk, clarified butter(ghee), jaangal meat and honey should be consumed regularly for maintenance of health and prevention of diseases.
The above mentioned can be taken as definition of balanced diet in Ayurveda, rice and barley as carbohydrate sources, green gram, meat as source of protein, ghee as fats, honey as source of sugar, rock salt as source of mineral, milk and goose berries as vitamin and mineral source which make the components of balanced diet.
