This myth quietly destroys your skin barrier.
Here’s what really happens :
• Skin is not a dirty pan
Your face doesn’t need force. Harsh scrubbing causes micro-tears you can’t see, leading to long-term damage.
• Over-scrubbing = barrier damage
Too much pressure or rough scrubs result in:
• Redness & burning
• Increased sensitivity
• More breakouts
• Sudden oiliness or dryness
• Worsened pigmentation
• It triggers MORE problems (especially in Indian skin)
Aggressive exfoliation can cause:
• Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH)
• Acne flare-ups
• Compromised healing
Brown skin pigments easily when irritated.
• Physical scrubs are often the culprit
Walnut shells, apricot kernels, sugar, salt → uneven edges = skin injury, not exfoliation.
• “Squeaky clean” feeling is a warning sign
That tight, stretched feeling = your natural oils are stripped.
What to do instead :
• Be gentle
• Use light circular motions
• Let the product do the work, not pressure
• Choose smarter exfoliation
• Chemical exfoliants (AHA, BHA, PHA) exfoliate evenly
• Start 1–2 times per week, not daily
• Support your skin barrier
• Moisturizer after exfoliation is mandatory
• Sunscreen the next day (very important!)
• Signs you’re over-exfoliating
• Stinging with basic products
• Sudden acne + redness
• Makeup looks patchy
→ Stop exfoliation immediately and repair barrier.
