भारतीय संस्कृति में गुरु देवता को तुल्य माना गया है। गुरु को हमेशा से ही ब्रह्मा, विष्णु और महेश के समान पूज्य माना गया है। वेद, उपनिषद और पुराणों का प्रणयन करने वाले वेद व्यास जी को समस्त मानव जाति का गुरु माना जाता है। महर्षि वेदव्यास का जन्म आषाढ़ पूर्णिमा को लगभग 3000 ई. पूर्व में हुआ था। उनके सम्मान में ही हर वर्ष आषाढ़ शुक्ल पूर्णिमा को गुरु पूर्णिमा मनाया जाता है। कहा जाता है कि इसी दिन व्यास जी ने शिष्यों एवं मुनियों को सर्वप्रथम श्री भागवतपुराण का ज्ञान दिया था। अत: यह शुभ दिन व्यास पूर्णिमा के नाम से जाना जाता है।
