I have a little different take on Veganism.
This is a fact that majority of Humans are Selfish. If there will be no return from Cows we might not even care about them at all. Gaushala’s won’t exist & all the cows will be left open, people will get irritated with cow dung everywhere & ultimately they will be left open in Jungles where it will be a good food for wild animals.
And one day, cows will become an endangered animal. That day, our ecosystem will start collapsing, our soil will become infertile because of less cow dung, so much of our kitchen waste- fruit, veggies peels, extra food which go to cows now, will start going to landfills, increasing Global Warming.
Cows are called domestic animals for a reason. I am for sure not denying the fact that people have become cruel with these animals overtime, injecting them with chemicals for more produce & cows have simply became a commodity for them.
This problem is completely in our hands to solve- can we take extra efforts to become aware of the source, how cows are being kept from where our milk is coming. Are they happy or not? & question the big companies or random Gaushala’s which do cruelty on these innocent animals.
At our household- all our dairy comes from a specific Gaushala. We are very well aware of the source, we visit there very often. My parents is a part of community which runs this Gaushala & they also help in raising funds, we ourselves donate there every month. We pay a premium price for the milk we get from there but it is pure & no cow is being hurt in the process.
And calves are also not stopped from drinking milk of their mother, whatever extra is left, comes to us. And it’s in a very limited quantity. There is a long waitlist for the people who wish to start milk delivery from there.
When we refer to cows as Gaumata, we actually mean it. We have her idol in our pooja room, we worship her, there is also a festival to celebrate cows- ‘Gaupaasthami’, every new moon is spent at the Gaushala, doing kirtan, feeding the cows & meeting this beautiful community.
Things became a problem when we moved away from our roots, our traditions, our culture being completely influenced from the west.
