Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of medicine, has a lot of advice on how to stay healthy and balanced during the winter months. Here are a few simple tips to help you stay in tune with the season:

👉 Stay warm: Ayurveda emphasizes the importance of staying warm during the winter months to prevent the accumulation of ama (toxins) in the body. Make sure to dress in warm, natural fibers such as wool and cotton.

👉 Eat warming foods: Consume warming, cooked foods that are easy to digest, such as soups, stews, and porridges made from grains like barley and oats. These foods can help balance the vata (air and space) and kapha (water and earth) doshas, which are most affected by the cold and dryness of winter.

👉 Include spices: Incorporate warming spices such as ginger, cinnamon, turmeric, and black pepper into your cooking to help stimulate digestion and boost circulation.

👉 Stay hydrated: It is important to stay hydrated even in cold weather, so make sure to drink plenty of warm water, herbal teas, and soups throughout the day.

👉 Exercise: Regular exercise is important to maintain good health, but in the winter it's important to be mindful of the potential for injury from slips and falls on icy surfaces. If you're unable to exercise outside, try indoor activities such as yoga, stretching, or a stationary bike.

👉 Get plenty of sleep: Ayurveda stresses the importance of getting plenty of rest during the winter to help conserve energy and rejuvenate the body.

TIP #3==“ Follow a heart-friendly diet”
Following a heart-friendly diet is one of the most important steps that you could adopt towards heart health. But, being in a society that is used to fast food and eating-on-the-go, this may be the most difficult to implement. But, begin with small things like including more servings of fresh vegetables and fruits, starting your day with stewed apples or pears, including soaked and blanched almonds in diet, including heart-healthy spices like fresh-ground black pepper, turmeric etc.
Make healthy food choices, like for instance, choose fresh foods over processed foods or leftovers, light foods over rich and deep-fried ones, go for warm and cooked foods over cold, heavy foods. If possible, talk to your physician and use immunity boosting herbal supplements, that also help reduce LDL cholesterol and plaque build-up.
Practice mindful eating. Eat moderately, as Ayurveda says, the ‘portion’ that fits in your two cupped palms. But, make sure you do not skip meals, as eating meals thrice a day at regular times trains your system to anticipate and digest food. If you suffer from sluggish digestion, you may stimulate it with a drink made of ginger, salt and lime. Include buttermilk as part of your diet during lunch. This can be spiked with roasted and ground cumin and fresh cilantro for flavour. Also, remember not to eat too late at night, as it can gets taxing for your system.

Since ancient times, fenugreek has been used for hair growth. It helps in keeping your hair well nourished, apart from keeping the scalp cool, preventing the occurrence of dandruff and dry hair. Together with amla, this can form an effective hair mask.

Roast fenugreek seeds slightly, powder it and store in an air-tight jar. To use, soak a cup of this powder together with equal quantity of amla powder in lukewarm water and leave overnight. The next day, use this as a hair mask, leave it on for 20 minutes before rinsing off.

It may be a good idea to include neem into your hair mask if you need to address issues such as hair lice, boils, dandruff etc. While amla nourishes your hair, the antibacterial properties of neem can help get rid of boils, dandruff and hair lice.
HOW TO USE:
Make a paste of fresh neem leaves that has been soaked in lukewarm water overnight. Mix powdered amla to this, and use this as a mask on hair and scalp, leaving it on for 20 minutes before rinsing. Notice the results yourself.

HOW TO USE:
Grind the leaves and extract the juice that is blackish green in colour. The combination of Shikakai and Amla (Indian gooseberry) could be the ideal go-to solution to protect your hair from split-ends and breakage. Both these ingredients are rich in anti-oxidants. While amla helps in keeping your hair healthy fighting off the damage, shikakai, being a rich source of essential vitamins, promotes hair growth by nourishing hair follicles. Coconut oil, strengthens, fortifies, moisturizes, and repairs dry, damaged hair.
===HOW TO USE===
Mix together a tablespoon each of shikakai and amla powder. Add two tablespoons of heated coconut oil to this and leave the mixture for three hours. On cooling the mixture, strain the oil and directly massage it onto your scalp and leave it on for 30 minutes before rinsing with water. This can be done on weekly basis, and works as a great tonic to maintain a healthy scalp and good hair texture.

Liver is the construction house of thousands of enzyme systems responsible for performing every activity in the body. A healthy liver is vital for proper functioning of eyes, brain, heart, go**ds, joints and kidneys.
Liver is the construction house of thousands of enzyme systems responsible for performing every activity in the body. A healthy liver is vital for proper functioning of eyes, brain, heart, go**ds, joints and kidneys.
Here are some important foods that you could consider including into your diet to maintain a healthy liver:
Vegetables
Garlic: The presence of certain compounds, including allicin and selenium, help in protecting liver from toxicity, thereby supporting detoxification process. These compounds also activate the liver enzymes responsible for flushing out toxins from the body.
Green leafy vegetables: Vegetables such as arugula, dandelion greens, bitter gourd, mustard greens, and chicory, contain numerous cleansing compounds that can neutralize heavy metals, which can bear heavily on the liver. Leafy greens also eliminate herbicides and pesticides from the body, thereby improving the flow of bile. Being highly rich in plant chlorophylls, the leafy greens suck up environmental toxins from the blood stream, protecting the liver.
Beets and Carrots: Being extremely high in flavonoids and beta-carotene, both beets and carrots help stimulate and improve overall functioning of the liver. This is done by thinning the bile, which enables an easy flow through the liver and small intestine. Increased bile flow can also prevent gallstones.
Cruciferous vegetables: Broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage and such other cruciferous vegetables can increase the amount of glucosinolate in your system, helping in enzyme production in the liver. They also flush out carcinogens and other toxins, thereby considerably cutting down risk of cancer.
Fruits
Grapefruit: Being rich in natural vitamin C and antioxidants, the two powerful liver cleansers, grapefruit also contain compounds that boost the production of liver detoxification enzymes. It also contains flavonoid, a compound known as naringenin, which causes liver to burn fat, rather than store it. Hence a small glass of freshly-squeezed grapefruit juice can help boost the production of liver detoxification enzymes that help in flushing out carcinogens and other toxins.
Avocados: Eating just one or two avocados a week even for a month without break, can repair a damaged liver, says research. Being rich in glutathione-producing compounds, avocados actively promote a healthy liver against toxic overload.
Apples: Apples are high in pectin, and they hold the chemical constituents required for the body to cleanse and release toxins from digestive tract. This makes it easier for the liver to handle the toxic load during the cleansing process.
Lemons: The citrus fruits contain high amounts of Vitamin C, which aids the body in synthesizing toxic materials into substance that can be absorbed by water. In fact, drinking freshly squeezed lime juice on an empty stomach in the morning helps stimulate the liver.
Walnuts: Walnuts, with their high amino acid, glutathione and omega-3 fatty acid content, help in detoxifying liver of disease causing ammonia. In fact, extracts from the hulls of walnuts are often used in liver-cleansing formulas. However, ensure that you chew the nuts well, until they are liquefied before swallowing.
Green Tea: Green Tea is loaded with catechins, a plant antioxidant which eliminates liver fat accumulation and promotes liver function. Green Tea also protects against toxin accumulation, which could cause serious damage to the liver and body.
Turmeric: Turmeric is one of the powerful foods for maintaining a healthy liver. They help regenerate damaged liver cells, boost natural production of bile, improve overall functioning of gallbladder, shrinks engorged hepatitis ducts and improves overall functioning of gall bladder.
Eating these foods may be a good way to maintain healthy functioning of the liver. Doing liver cleanse at least twice a year, can eliminate toxins that may be trapped in your liver.
The best dietary instructions to be followed are:
1. Eat organic fruits such as apples, cherries, figs, grapefruits, avocado, plums, papaya, kiwi, pears and plums in the morning for breakfast.
2. For lunch and dinner, include fresh vegetables, and home-made soups or salads, containing the mentioned detoxifying vegetables. Few other liver supporting veggies, not mentioned above are, artichoke, asparagus, kale, brussel sprouts, lettuce, and the like.
3. Remember to avoid coffee, alcohol, milk, and bottled juices, as these can lower the effectiveness of the liver cleanse, adding more toxins to the body.
