Dacryocystitis is an infection of the lacrimal sac, usually due to blockage of the nasolacrimal duct (the tear drainage system). It's often painful and can become serious if left untreated.

🔍 Symptoms of Dacryocystitis:
Pain, redness, and swelling in the inner corner of the eye (near the nose)

Excessive tearing (epiphora)

Discharge from the eye (may be pus-like)

Tenderness or pressure near the tear sac

Fever (in more severe infections)

Crusting around the eye

💊 Treatment Options:
1. Antibiotics
Usually the first line of treatment:

Oral antibiotics: e.g., amoxicillin-clavulanate, cephalexin, or clindamycin

Topical antibiotics: eye drops or ointment like tobramycin or moxifloxacin (used in mild or early cases)

2. Warm Compresses
Apply warm, moist compresses to the affected area several times a day to reduce pain and encourage drainage.

3. Massage
Gentle massage over the lacrimal sac (if advised by a doctor) may help clear the duct in some non-acute cases.

4. Surgery (if chronic or recurrent)
Dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR): Creates a new drainage path between the lacrimal sac and the nasal cavity.

May be done externally or endoscopically (through the nose).

🚨 When to See a Doctor
Symptoms last more than a day or worsen

Fever or facial swelling develops

Vision becomes affected

Pus is draining continuously

Dacryocystitis should not be self-treated in moderate or severe cases—early medical treatment is essential to prevent complications like abscess or orbital cellulitis.

👁️ Eye problems that might signal or cause other diseases:
Diabetic Retinopathy

Caused by diabetes.

May indicate poor blood sugar control, and if untreated, can lead to blindness.

Hypertensive Retinopathy

Caused by high blood pressure.

Can reflect or worsen cardiovascular issues.

Glaucoma

Increased pressure in the eye can damage the optic nerve.

Some studies suggest it may be linked to systemic vascular issues or even neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s.

Uveitis (inflammation inside the eye)

Often associated with autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, or Crohn’s disease.

Optic Neuritis

Inflammation of the optic nerve.

Sometimes an early sign of multiple sclerosis (MS).

Cataracts in young people

Could be a sign of metabolic issues like galactosemia or diabetes.
