Pityriasis alba: Common skin condition seen in children.
In this condition white patches can appear on skin most often on the face (especially cheeks), or upper bodies (arms and torso), typically in darker skinned individuals in the summer or after sun exposure . Parents may worry this could be vitiligo, an autoimmune depigmenting condition, when it is in fact related to a history of atopic dermatitis (eczema).
The key clue is scaly dry skin in that area,
that may or may not be itchy.

Solution? It’s as easy as simply moisturizing with a thick unscented cream twice daily (ideally at least once after bathing when the skin is damp ), and the area gradually regains pigment over time, though it can take months.
Low potency corticosteroids like hydrocortisone 1% cream or ointment can expedite resolution, as well as non-steroid calcineurin inhibitors like tacrolimus ointment or pimecrolimus 1% cream.
Crisaborole ointment is another good non-steroid alternative.
