Multiple sonographies or usg scans during pregnancy: Are they harmful for the fetus?

No getting repeated usg scans done during pregnancy is not harmful for the growing fetus. A sonography is used as an additional tool alongwith the clinical examination done by your doctor to monitor the well being of your fetus. The scans that are routinely done in pregnancy include
1. Dating scan : to confirm pregnancy
2. Nt scan -level 1 scan to rule out congenital anomalies in the fetus
3. Anomaly scan - TIFFA or level 2 scan to rule out any developmentalor congenital anomalies
4. Growth scans with or without color doppler : to assess for fetal growth, liquor and flow to the fetus.

Apart from these your doctor may choose to get scans done more frequently if you have a high risk pregnancy as in the cases of pre eclampsia, gestational diabetes, twins, multiple pregnancies, fetal growth retardation, rh negative pregnancy etc

Hypertension in pregnancy

A bp recording of more than140 and 90 mm hg in a pregnant patient at or after 20 weeks of gestation with no prior history of hypertension is labelled as pregnancy induced hypertension.

Signs & symptoms include
Headache
Blurring of vision
Swelling
Nausea and vomiting
Pain abdomen

HPV vaccine is given to prevent infections caused by HPV (human papilloma virus). HPV leads to ano-genital warts in males and females. It can also cause cancer - cervical cancer in females and pe**le, throat, oral and a**l cancer in males.
HPV vaccine comes in 3 forms - bivalent which protects against HPV 16, 18 ; quadrivalent which protects against HPV 6, 11, 16, 18 strains and nonavalent providing protection against 9 strains
The vaccine is recommended for
1. all females aged 9-26 years and for those aged 27-45 years and not vaccinated previously
2. all males between the ages of 9 & 45 years
It is safe in breastfeeding mothers but is not recommended in pregnancy or if you are trying to get pregnant
It is also not useful in cases of active HPV infection
