As we all know, crying is a form of communication that children use to express their anger or frustration. When this crying and screaming becomes excessive then it causes overwhelming distress to the child. So, a question comes to mind.

Why do children with autism usually cry? There could be many reasons. However, we are taking a few of them, which are the most important. First would be due to any physical discomfort, due to hunger, it could be any sleep disturbance.

It may be that the child needs any special attention from the caretaker that they are not getting. Any of these could be a reason for the child to exhibit this excessive crying behaviour. It could be that the child needs a desired object, and if he is not getting that, he will start crying to get that object. They think that if they cry for something, then it will be allotted to them.

The emotional area of their brain is not doing the work in the way that it was supposed to be done, and hence the outcome may not have a reason, the crying of the child may not have a reason. It might be just a feeling of sadness, a feeling that tells something is not good inside the child. It might not be easy for the child to express what they are feeling or what they want to tell.

Sometimes children with autism cry because everything goes against them. They want something else, and if that thing isn't given to the chil,d then they start crying. They want everything according to their choice.

Some children don't like bright lights, loud noises, or crowded places. Crowded spaces can be very distressing for an autistic individual. These may also be a reason for crying. Children with autism may have trouble expressing their needs and emotions. Unexpected changes can also be a huge reason.

To reduce this excessive crying behaviour, first we need to do a functional assessment. We need to identify the triggering point before we implement any strategies. So there is a purpose for this behaviour always. So the purpose of crying or the triggering point has to be identified, whether the child is angry, hungry, or frustrated.

The very important strategy that we need to use for reducing any challenging behaviour is to teach communication skills. We have to teach appropriate communication skills so that the child will be able to express their emotions. We need to teach them using simple words so that at least they will be able to express their needs. We need to teach them visual cards.

There will be an emoji of every emotion in each card. The child will be aware of those emojis according to their mood. And instead of crying, the child will give the card accordingly.

By this, we can understand how the child is feeling. So when we use this simple technique, the child will express what they are feeling with the help of cards instead of crying. We have to replace that crying behaviour with an alternate appropriate behaviour. We should also provide them with a safe and calming space where they will not feel distressed.

The same strategy should be followed every day, and we should have patience while doing these techniques because it's time time-consuming activities. But we have to keep in mind that seeking professional assistance is very important.

We have to meet an occupational therapist, speech therapist, or behaviour therapist in order to understand the child's reasons for excessive crying. And for better results, we need to implement these strategies along with their support.
