Childhood leukemia is the most common type of cancer that affects children.

🩸 Leukemia is a cancer of white blood cells that starts in bone marrow (the soft center part of bones), which produces blood cells. Once a leukemic cell develops, it multiplies quickly in the bone marrow and can prevent healthy blood cells from forming. Leukemic cells can spread to various parts of the body, including brain, liver and kidneys.

🩸 Common symptoms of childhood leukemia include fever with or without an infection; bone pain, joint pain, or limpness; feeling weak or tired; and easy bruising.

🩸 Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML) are the two most common types of childhood leukemia.

🩸 To diagnose childhood leukemia, doctors perform a physical examination and few tests such as complete blood count, bone-marrow studies, etc.

🩸 Chemotherapy is used for all types of childhood leukemia. Other treatment includes radiation therapy (high-energy rays used to kill cancer cells); bone marrow transplant (intravenous administration of healthy bone marrow cells from a genetically matched donor);and immunotherapy (therapies that use the immune system to identify and destroy leukemic cells).

🩸 If treated timely, the 5-year survival rate is approximately 90% for ALL and 68% for AML.
