What is a Lipoma?

A lipoma is a benign (non-cancerous) tumor made up of fatty tissue. It grows slowly under the skin and usually feels soft, movable, and painless.

Common Locations:
• Shoulders
• Back
• Arms
• Thighs
• Neck
• Forehead or scalp

Symptoms:
• Soft, doughy lump under the skin
• Usually painless (but can hurt if pressing on nerves)
• Slowly increases in size
• Easily movable under the skin

Causes and Risk Factors:
• Unknown exact cause
• More common in adults aged 40-60
• Family history (can be hereditary)
• Slightly more common in men
• May be associated with minor trauma (rare)

Diagnosis:
• Clinical Examination by a doctor
• Ultrasound (to confirm it’s a fatty mass)
• MRI/CT scan (if deeper or atypical)
• Biopsy (if there’s doubt about diagnosis)

When to Seek Medical Attention:
• Lump is growing rapidly
• Painful or tender
• Becomes hard or fixed
• Skin over it changes color
• Interferes with movement or daily activities

Treatment:
1. Observation – If small, painless, and not bothersome, no treatment is needed.
2. Surgical Removal – Indicated if:
• Painful or cosmetically unacceptable
• Presses on nerves
• Rapid growth
• Diagnostic uncertainty

Surgery is usually minor and done under local anesthesia. Recurrence is rare after complete removal.

Post-Surgery Care:
• Keep the area clean and dry
• Avoid strenuous activity for a few days
• Report any signs of infection (redness, swelling, pus)

Prognosis:
• Excellent
• Very low risk of turning into cancer
• Recurrence is rare if completely excised

An arteriovenous (AV) fistula is a surgically created connection between an artery and a vein, primarily established to facilitate hemodialysis in patients with kidney failure. This procedure involves connecting a vein to an artery, allowing for increased blood flow necessary for effective dialysis treatments. The AV fistula is typically created in an outpatient setting under local anesthesia, and it remains functional longer than other forms of vascular access.Additionally, it carries a lower risk of infection and is less prone to clotting, making it a preferred choice for long-term dialysis access.Need to talk to a doctor? 📅 Schedule your appointment now 📍 Get directions to our clinic Remember, you're not alone in this journey! 💙 We're here to help you every step of the way.
