Shadi Lal Koul: The King of Kashmiri Comedy

Shadi Lal Koul, also known as Shamas ud Din or fondly referred to as Nik Lal and Nik Bub, was a celebrated Kashmiri actor renowned for his exceptional comedic talent. Born on 4th January 1954 in Chotta Bazar, Srinagar, he left an indelible mark on the world of entertainment with his remarkable career, which spanned from 1974 to 2020. Shadi Lal Koul is particularly famous for his unforgettable dialogues such as "Begum salal tche kyazi goye malal," "Gonaye wanye chakha bonaye," and "Chaki pechni rass Yass poshi ta tass." His wit and humor earned him the unofficial title of the "King of Comedy."

Shadi Lal Koul's roots were firmly embedded in Kashmiri culture. He grew up in the Chotta Bazar area of Habba Kadal in Srinagar, where he honed his unique style of comedy. He was the eldest child in a family of one sister and three brothers. His father, a businessman, had dreams of Shadi Lal following in his footsteps. To that end, young Shadi Lal was encouraged to learn Sanskrit, considering its significance in Ayurvedic medicine. He joined the Ranbir Sanskrit Pathshala at the Ranbir High School, laying the foundation for his later linguistic prowess. Following this, he pursued post-graduation in Sanskrit and earned the title of Prabhakar in Hindi.

In 1974, Shadi Lal Koul embarked on his career in the entertainment industry, becoming a high school Sanskrit teacher. His early passion for theatre led him to co-found the Yasmeen Dramatic Club with Abdul Rahim Kuchay. He furthered his contributions to Kashmiri theatre by establishing the Kali Das Theatre, one of the oldest theatre groups in Kashmir, alongside his friend Dr. Ayash Arif.

His first play, "Yi Janam Ti Su Janam," directed by Jai Kishan Zutshi, marked the beginning of a prolific journey. Notably, the Tassruf play in 1975 earned him his first Best Actor award. ہلاکو خان کی بیٹی بغداد میں گشت کررہی تھی کہ ایک ہجوم پر اس کی نظر پڑی۔ پوچھا لوگ یہاں کیوں اکٹھے ہیں؟
جواب آیا: ایک عالم کے پاس کھڑے ہیں۔
اس نے عالم کو اپنے سامنے پیش ہونے کا حکم دیا۔ عالم کو تاتاری شہزادی کے سامنے لا حاضر کیا گیا۔
شہزادی مسلمان عالم سے سوال کرنے لگی: کیا تم لوگ اللہ پر ایمان نہیں رکھتے؟
عالم: یقیناً ہم ایمان رکھتے ہیں
شہزادی: کیا تمہارا ایمان نہیں کہ اللہ جسے چاہے غالب کرتا ہے؟
عالم: یقیناً ہمارا اس پر ایمان ہے۔
شہزادی: تو کیا اللہ نے آچ ہمیں تم لوگوں پر غالب نہیں کردیا ہے؟
عالم: یقیناً کردیا ہے-
شہزادی: تو کیا یہ اس بات کی دلیل نہیں کہ خدا ہمیں تم سے زیادہ چاہتا ہے؟
عالم: نہیں
شہزادی: کیسے؟
عالم: تم نے کبھی چرواہے کو دیکھا ہے؟
شہزادی: ہاں دیکھا ہے
عالم: کیا اس کے ریوڑ کے پیچھے چرواہے نے اپنے کچھ کتے رکھے ہوتے ہیں؟
شہزادی: ہاں رکھے ہوتے ہیں۔
عالم: اچھا تو اگر کچھ بھیڑیں چرواہے کو چھوڑ کو کسی دوسری طرف کو نکل کھڑی ہوں، اور چرواہے کی سن کر واپس آنے کو تیار ہی نہ ہوں، تو چرواہا کیا کرتا ہے؟
شہزادی: وہ ان کے پیچھے اپنے کتے دوڑاتا ہے تاکہ وہ ان کو واپس اس کی کمان میں لے آئیں۔
عالم: وہ کتے کب تک ان بھیڑوں کے پیچھے پڑے رہتے ہیں؟
شہزادی: جب تک وہ فرار رہیں اور چرواہے کے اقتدار میں واپس نہ آجائیں۔
عالم نے کہا : تم تاتاری لوگ زمین میں ہم مسلمانوں کے حق میں خدا کے چھوڑے ہوئے کتے ہو جب تک ہم خدا کے در سے بھاگے رہیں گے اور اس کی اطاعت اور اس کے منہج پر نہیں آجائیں گے، تب تک خدا تمہیں ہمارے پیچھے دوڑائے رکھے گا، اور ھماری گردنوں پر مسلط رکھے گا جب ہم خدا کے در پر واپس آجائیں گے اُس دن تمہارا کام ختم ہوجائے گا۔
آج پھر وہی حال ہے آج کتے ہم پر مسلط ہیں یہودیوں عیساٸیوں اور لبرل کی صورت میں
اور جب تک ہم واپس نا آجاٸیں اسلام کی طرف تب تک ہم پر مسلط رہیں گے ۔ ذرا سوچیے !!۔

A tall personality of Kashmir who gave countless and significant sacrifices for mother land was among front line leaders of kashmir struggle since 1931 to 30 Jan 1973.He remained active to get rid of slavery of his people from the cruel and invaders .Unforgettable personality of Kashmir struggle due to his service for motherland.He was elected as first jk constitute assembly in 1948--53 by the people.There after he resigned from constitute assembly for preservation of people.He was offered a ministry in 1953 by Bakshi Ghulam Mohammad Regime but he refused.After his resign he was allegedly involved in many cases like Hazratbal case,Kashmir sazish case etc along with other political leaders of jk.
He spent more than 10yrs of life in prision .
Almighty Allaha bless him highest place in heaven .
