🧠 “The Patient Who Believed Google More Than His Gut” —
Myths & Facts in Gastroenterology
Last week, a middle-aged professional walked into the clinic with a familiar story.
“I have acidity, doctor. It’s just stress.”
He had been self-medicating for 3 years.
No tests. No diagnosis. Just beliefs.
That conversation reminded me how myths in gastroenterology quietly delay care — and sometimes cost lives.
Let’s bust a few, through real-world storytelling 👇
Myth 1: “Acidity is normal if you’re stressed.”
Fact: Occasional acidity is common. Persistent acidity may indicate GERD, H. pylori infection, or even Barrett’s esophagus. Stress is a trigger, not the cause.
Myth 2: “Loose motions mean food poisoning only.”
Fact: Recurrent diarrhea can signal IBD, IBS, malabsorption, or infections — ignoring it delays treatment.
Myth 3: “Fatty liver happens only to alcoholics.”
Fact: NAFLD affects non-drinkers too — linked to obesity, diabetes, and sedentary lifestyle. It’s now one of the fastest-growing liver diseases.
Myth 4: “Blood in stools is just piles.”
Fact: It could be piles — or colorectal cancer. Never self-diagnose bleeding.
Myth 5: “If pain settles with medicines, it’s nothing serious.”
Fact: Symptom relief doesn’t mean disease resolution. Many GI cancers stay silent until late.
That patient?
He needed investigations — not assumptions.
💡 In gastroenterology, myths don’t just misinform — they postpone diagnosis.
And in digestive health, time matters.
Let’s replace fear with facts and Google with guidance.
