Cold weather can affect your kidneys in several ways.Cold weather raises blood pressure

Research has shown that heart attacks are twice as likely to happen during cold spells lasting more three days, for example in people aged 60 or over.
The risk of ischaemic stroke (where a blockage cuts off blood supply to the brain) also increases with colder temperatures.

Cold weather makes you more vulnerable to infectionsCold temperatures can cause a decrease in the body’s immune function

A new, large-scale study published in JAMA Internal Medicine analysed over 220,000 adults followed for more than 33 years.

The study found that consuming one tablespoon of butter per day was associated with a 15 per cent higher risk of death (from any cause) compared with people who ate little or no butter.

Higher butter intake was also linked with greater cancer risk.

In contrast, those who consumed roughly 1.5 to two tablespoons of plant oils a day had a 16 per cent lower risk of all-cause mortality, along with reduced risks of cancer and cardiovascular disease.

So, when you hear people promoting butter while attacking plant oils, it’s time to unfollow them!

How to protect your kidneys and detect damage early
You don’t have to wait for visible symptoms.
Recommend regular kidney screening for people who are at high risk:
Blood creatinine/eGFR test
Urine albumin/protein test

You should get tested if you:

Have diabetes or high blood pressure
Have heart disease
Have a family history of kidney problems
Are over 60 years old
Early detection can slow or even stop kidney damage through better BP and sugar control, medication adjustments and lifestyle improvements.

Don’t wait for swollen feet, breathlessness or foamy urine to take kidney damage seriously.
Ask your doctor for routine kidney tests, let your labs speak before your symptoms do.
Early action can save your kidneys and your life.

INDIA CARRIES THE HIGHEST BURDEN
Between January 2022 and October 2024, the team enrolled 1,244 patients — 798 men and 446 women. Overall, 37.1% of all participants carried an MDRO. But the numbers looked starkly different when broken down by country.

MDRO carriage rates by country:

India: 83.1% (290 of 349 patients) — highest in the study

Italy: 31.5%

United States: 20.1%

Netherlands: 10.8% — lowest

This means more than 8 in 10 Indian patients already carried resistant organisms
Urgent measures are needed to address rising antibiotic resistance, and strict rationalisation of antibiotic use is imperative.

University of Nottingham, UK, found that paracetamol use was associated with a 24% increased risk of peptic ulcer bleeding and a 36% increased risk of lower gastrointestinal bleeding.

Additionally, it raised the risk of *chronic kidney disease by 19%,* heart failure by 9%, and hypertension by 7%.
