atoma is a type of acquired cholesteatoma, a growth of skin-like tissue (squamous epithelium) in the middle ear space, specifically within the epitympanum (attic). This area is located above and behind the eardrum, housing the head of the malleus and the short process of the incus. Epitympanic cholesteatomas can erode surrounding bone, including the facial nerve, and potentially lead to hearing loss, ear drainage, and other complications.
