Calling Physics / Math Volunteer

We've conducted research on light transmission of intraocular lenses using a UV-Vis spectrometer. However, we're currently stuck on a few math-related calculations. If you - or someone in your network - has expertise in this area, we'd be grateful for a few hours of support [possibly less].

We're happy to share the dataset via email. This is a small volunteer request, but your help would mean a lot. Many thanks in advance!

Honoring a Legacy

Every July in Mathania - a proud township just over 32 km north of Jodhpur - residents gather in remembrance of Setha Ram, a 22-year-old whose life was tragically cut short in the 1997 riots. In his honor, the community organizes an annual free eye camp, channeling grief into hope and care.

Mathania, once famed globally for its fiery red chili peppers, now grapples with a water table that has receded over 1500 feet. With agriculture waning, a new wave of small-scale manufacturing is emerging, fueled by the undiminished spirit of its people.

On 7 July 2025, our nonprofit team joined hands with local leader Mr. Daga, who spearheaded publicity and arranged transport. We treated 401 patients and selected 26 individuals for free cataract surgery. These patients were transported to our base hospital in Jodhpur and successfully operated - restoring sight and dignity. We had the privilege to operate on martyr Setha Ram’s uncle who is pictured in image 3.

This initiative not only honored a martyr’s memory but also advanced our mission to reduce avoidable blindness in the underserved communities of the Thar Desert.

On a Sultry July Morning

Summer in North India brings with it a notable lull in elective eye surgeries—an odd seasonal rhythm with no clinical explanation except the overwhelming heat and widespread lethargy. Yet at Tarabai Eye Hospital, our commitment never wilts. Defying the midsummer slump, we kicked off July’s outreach calendar with a free eye camp at the Udaimandir Government Dispensary on 4 July 2025. Ophthalmic Assistant Mr. Wasim Akram, along with our dedicated field team, transformed the clinic into a makeshift eye care hub, welcoming 17 patients with various ocular ailments.

Of these, two patients were diagnosed with operable cataracts and were promptly admitted for surgery the same evening - restoring their vision without delay. Even in the face of oppressive heat, our resolve remains firm: to offer affordable and accessible eye care to all who need it. This camp reflects that spirit—a small but powerful intervention where compassion meets precision. Enjoy the accompanying photos of this camp.

Children’s Free Eye Camp Report

Tarabai Eye Hospital hosted a dedicated eye camp for children on 24 June 2025, welcoming 11 pre-registered patients ranging from 6 months to 18 years, including five girls. Each child received a comprehensive eye examination from our team.

Nine children were diagnosed with refractive errors, presenting visual acuities between 6/9 and 6/18. They were prescribed corrective eyeglasses to restore clear vision - an essential intervention, as uncorrected refractive errors contribute to nearly 20% of avoidable blindness in India.

Five children also exhibited muscle fatigue and eye strain and were advised to begin pencil push-up exercises at home to strengthen ocular muscles and reduce symptoms. One child, just 6 months old, was diagnosed with bilateral congenital cataracts. His sight-saving surgery is scheduled for the coming week. Another child, a six-year-old girl with divergent squint, has been booked for corrective squint surgery.

This pediatric camp represents a vital step forward in protecting the eyesight of vulnerable children - and echoes our commitment to early diagnosis, timely treatment, and lifelong clarity.

Blink & You’ll Miss It !

We are pleased to announce a special three-day eye camp dedicated exclusively to children—a rare initiative, as most free eye camps focus on adult blindness. India has the highest number of blind children globally, with an estimated 270,000 affected. Additionally, refractive errors account for about 20% of visual impairment in school-aged children.

This unique camp will address a range of pediatric eye conditions through comprehensive examinations and treatment, free of charge, at our base hospital. To ensure each child receives the care they deserve, the camp is limited to 30 pre-registered participants. Due to the detailed nature of pediatric eye evaluations, registrations are strictly capped. Parents wishing to take advantage of this opportunity are encouraged to register at the earliest.

Volunteers Visit Eye Camp

On June 6, 2025, we had the honor of hosting a team of 14 dedicated volunteers from Revival Health, a leading medical solutions company based in the United States, under the aegis of SEE International. The team was led by Ms. Megan Odell, with invaluable support from Komal, and actively participated in our monthly eye camp at the Udaimandir Government Dispensary. Their efforts were instrumental in registering patients and preparing those slated for surgery by carefully marking the correct eye with adhesive tape—a crucial step in ensuring precision, care and safety.

Later in the evening, the team visited our hospital, where they were given a guided tour, followed by an insightful presentation showcasing the hospital's history, impact, and ongoing mission in providing free eye care to underserved communities. Their engagement didn’t stop there. The volunteers proceeded to the operating room, where they gained firsthand experience in preparing patients for surgery and observed the meticulous process of sight-restoring eye surgery—a powerful introduction to the transformative work being done in nonprofit healthcare.

We extend our sincere gratitude to SEE International for facilitating this impactful visit and to Ms. Odell for her leadership and valuable insights in the field of eye care.

This camp was a testament to our shared commitment to fighting avoidable blindness—37 patients received onsite treatment, and six underwent surgery completely free of charge, including artificial lens implants to restore their vision at no cost.

Together, we continue to make vision a reality for those in need.

Bridging Minds and Hearts :
A Memorable Evening with Dr. Arif Mohammad Khan

On May 25, 2025 I had the profound honor of being a guest of honor at the first anniversary celebrations of the Al Abbas Education Society, an institution dedicated to fostering learning and social harmony. The occasion was made even more special by the presence of the Honorable Dr. Arif Mohammad Khan, Governor of Bihar, who graced the event as the chief guest. Sharing the stage with such an eminent scholar and statesman was a singular honour and truly an unforgettable experience - one I could never have imagined in my wildest dreams.

The event was a remarkable testament to unity and inclusivity. It commenced with an Islamic prayer, followed by a Hindu priest’s recitation, symbolizing the spirit of communal harmony that the society strives to uphold. Dr. Khan delivered an inspiring speech on the transformative power of education in bridging societal divides and fostering mutual respect and understanding. His words resonated deeply, offering both wisdom and a roadmap for a more cohesive society.

In my brief address, I emphasized the importance of eye health and urged the lay public to take proactive steps to prevent avoidable blindness. As someone closely involved in the eye care initiatives of the Al Abbas Education Society, I have witnessed firsthand how vision can transform lives. It was a privilege to contribute to the discourse on well-being and societal harmony alongside such distinguished personalities. The celebration was not just an event—it was a reaffirmation of shared values and a vision for a brighter, more united future.

All Eyes this Way !

Aligning with the goals of the National Programme for the Prevention of Blindness [NPCB&VI] of reducing the burden of blindness, our next free eye camp was organized at the Bala Sati Govt Dispensary on 20-5-2025. Despite the intense summer heat, 33 patients visited the clinic for consultation. Our team provided essential eye care and free medication on the spot.

Nine individuals diagnosed with cataracts were selected for surgery, and all received sight-restoring operations with artificial lens implantation at no cost.

The accompanying picture reflects fewer numbers of operated cases, as several patients arrived later in the evening for post-surgical dressings, avoiding the scorching midday sun. Every restored vision reaffirms our commitment to a brighter future for the visually impaired.
