Poetry in pigment

In the quiet shimmer of torchlight, a young man’s left eye revealed a secret - two shades of brown, subtly entwined in a single iris. A subtle heterochromia, hidden in plain sight and unnoticed for years until I shone a light into his eye for a routine eye check-up. It's not a disease and certainly not a threat, but just nature’s quiet flourish - a pigmentary footnote in the story of sight. A reminder that even the ordinary holds quiet marvels.

The Rodin at Jaitsur

He squatted silently against a pale stone wall, eyes closed, arms resting on his knees - an unintentional mirror of Rodin’s "The Thinker", reimagined in rural Rajasthan. No pedestal, no bronze - just a yellow turban, a white dhoti, and the quiet dignity of waiting, carried the same weight of introspection. In his right hand he clutched the doctor's prescription slip; beside him, books and a stick, like props in a play. Though his pupils awaited dilation, his thoughts perhaps wandered through time, flitting through memories, worries and hope all tethered to nothing but the stillness of that moment. A living sculpture, carved not by tools, but by life itself.

This scene was captured in the village of Jaitsur In the dusty arid plains of Rajasthan, 75 kilometers west of Jodhpur. We had organized a free eye camp in this sleepy village on 4-11-25. In living memory of the residents, it was the first time that an eye camp was organized in this village. We set up a makeshift clinic in the office of the headmaster of the local primary school. There we examined and treated 114 patients with various eye diseases.

Free medicines were dispensed to those who needed them We also prescribed 28 eyeglasses on site. Ten patients requiring cataract surgery were transported to our base hospital at Jodhpur and operated the same day free of charge. All patients also received an artificial lens implant at no cost. And in case you are wondering what happened to our Thinker, he had very early cataract and good ambulatory vision so he was advised to get operated at another time.

Kabir Ashram
30-X-25

Under the hallowed presence of Saint Ramvilasji, revered head of Kabir Ashram in Mandore, we held a free eye camp on 30th October 2025. The ashram’s tranquil atmosphere steeped in quietude and spiritual grace, was deeply calming for our entire team.

After blessing the congregation, Saint Ramvilasji graciously invited me to speak on the prevention of common eye diseases, engaging the gathering with warmth and pearls of eye health wisdom. We then commenced the clinic, examining and treating 210 patients for a range of ocular conditions. Free medicines were dispensed on-site. Among the many lives touched was a poignant case: a 27-year-old woman with congenital cataracts in both eyes, now ripened to near-total blindness.

A total of 26 patients with cataract were transported to our base hospital for free cataract surgery, all performed the same day. All cases received an artificial lens implant too, at no cost. One courageous elder, nearly blind from mature cataracts in both eyes, underwent consecutive-day surgeries - restoring her sight and independence.

In total, 27 transformative operations were completed, adding to the govts. efforts to eradicating avoidable blindness. Each restored eye is a step toward dignity, mobility, and joy.

Project Sathin

On 27th October 2025, we conducted a free eye camp in the village of Sathin, treating 173 patients on-site for various eye conditions. Eighteen individuals diagnosed with cataracts were transported to our base hospital, where they underwent free surgeries and received artificial lens implants - restoring clarity and joy to lives once shrouded in darkness.

Among them were two patients with advanced white cataracts in both eyes. They received consecutive-day surgeries, regaining full vision and transitioning from complete dependence to confident independence. From needing assistance for every daily task, they now move freely, participate in social gatherings, and reclaim their dignity.

Each restored eye is a step toward a brighter, more inclusive world.

A New Lens on Life

A 10-year-old schoolboy, struggling with myopia, received a pair of subsidised eyeglasses through our ongoing school vision screening program. He carefully chose a frame he loved, and we ensured his minus-power lenses were crafted and delivered with care.

The moment he wore them, his face lit up with a radiant, ear-to-ear smile - pure joy at seeing the world clearly for the first time. Chalkboards, faces, trees… everything came into focus.

This is the power of vision. A small intervention, a big transformation. Let’s keep lighting up young lives - one pair of glasses at a time.
