The Eagles Got it Wrong !

Yes, they did. When Henley and Frey opened Hotel California with the line “On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair,” they clearly hadn’t spent time in the Thar Desert. Out here, it’s never a cool breeze - it’s always a hot wind whipping through your hair. But alas, it’s far too late for the Eagles to revise their smash hit, so we’ll let it stand as poetic license.

With that settled, let me take you along on our next desert journey: a drive 110 kilometers west of Jodhpur to the village of Tena. Here we organized a camp on 24th March 2026.

Over the course of the camp, 156 patients were examined and treated for a range of eye ailments. Mr Prahlad Singh dispensed eyeglasses to 33 patients turning their misty vision to crystal clear. Among the Outpatients, 14 individuals were diagnosed with cataracts requiring surgery. With dignity and hope, they were transported aboard our Magic Bus to the base hospital in Jodhpur, where each received free cataract surgery with artificial lens implants.

These transformative operations were carried out by our dedicated medical team, strengthened by the tireless volunteer efforts of Dr. Joseph Keenan from Ireland. His skill, generosity, and compassion left a lasting mark on the community, restoring sight and renewing lives.

Scary Monsters !

I am proud to share that the 84th Annual Conference of the All India Ophthalmological Society (AIOC 2026) was hosted by the Rajasthan State Ophthalmological Society in Jaipur from March 12–15, 2026. This event holds special significance for me, as I was serving as President of the state society when we presented our bid to host the national conference two years ago. It was a keenly contested process, with several states vying for the honor, and our successful bid makes this achievement deeply personal.

The conference was organized at the Jaipur Exhibition & Convention Centre (JICC) and proved to be a resounding success. Delegates appreciated not only the rich scientific program but also the Rajasthani-themed décor, The carnival atmosphere in the grounds outside [including painted up scary dudes] and the impeccable scientific atmosphere in the halls inside, the punctuality with which sessions began and ended, and the vibrant cultural performances that enlivened the evenings.

I was privileged to contribute to three important sessions at this conference.

· As Chief Instructor, I led my Low Vision Course, a 90‑minute program where my co‑instructors and I imparted practical skills in clinical low vision management to a large group of participants.

· In another instruction course, I lectured on “Public Eye Health & Safety”, emphasizing how ophthalmologists can integrate these principles into daily practice, advocate for reforms, and lobby for stronger laws to safeguard public eye health.

· Finally, in the popular Ophthall Session, I spoke on “Overseas Opportunities for Indian Ophthalmologists.” This topic generated considerable interest, as India now has a growing cadre of highly skilled young surgeons - comparable to the best in the world - who are seeking global avenues, whether through volunteer service, locum positions, or long‑term career opportunities.

Mathania : Here we Come Again !

On 20 March 2026, our outreach team journeyed to the township of Mathania, an hour’s drive away from Jodhpur. This was our second camp in Mathania this winter. It was organized at the huge cattle pound cm hospital - called a “Goshala” in the vernacular – situated at Rampura, a little distance outside the township.

Over the course of the camp, 252 patients were examined and treated for a range of eye ailments. Mr Prahlad Singh dispensed eyeglasses to 33 patients turning their misty vision to crystal clear. Among the Outpatients, 28 individuals were diagnosed with cataracts requiring surgery.

Kajal’s Gift

In February, we were privileged to host three exceptionally talented volunteers - Ms. Kajal Karia, Mr. Devan Lakhani, and Mr. Ramesh Karia. I have previously shared posts about their exemplary work with us, which included school vision screening in rural Rajasthan and conducting a workshop on Binocular Vision. Today, I wish to highlight Ms. Kajal Karia’s remarkable fundraising initiative for our hospital.

Kajal undertook a grueling 60‑kilometer walk under the blazing sun of Gujarat to raise funds for our institution. It took her 15 hours to cover the distance from Rajkot to Virpur in the scorching heat. She was joined for part of this journey by her septuagenarian father, the indefatigable Mr. Ramesh Karia, whose spirit of service continues to inspire.

Through this extraordinary effort, Kajal raised a substantial sum that enabled us to install several much‑needed air conditioners at the hospital, helping patients and staff withstand the fiendish summer heat of Jodhpur, where temperatures soar to 45°C. She also gifted specialized equipment for binocular vision testing, low vision care and cataract surgery instruments to improve diagnostic and surgical care at the hospital.

After meeting these essential needs at the hospital, the remaining funds were used to purchase school bags, art kits, geometry boxes, and books for the children of the school she had visited during vision screening, benefiting more than 400 students in the Thar Desert region.

We are deeply aware of the extraordinary lengths you have gone to procure these gifts and the transformative impact of your work in this region. With heartfelt gratitude, we thank you, Ms. Kajal Karia, for your generosity, altruism, and unwavering commitment to restoring sight and dignity. Thank you Ramesh Bhai for encouragement and wholehearted support you provided Kajal to undertake this fundraiser.

Enjoy the photos which provide glimpses of the fundraising walk and the items it helped fund.

Bala Sati Monthly camp

Our next free eye camp was held at the Bala Sati Govt Dispensary, Ratanada – one of the three fixed facility monthly camps we have been conducting faithfully for the past 18 years. This was on 20 March 2026. Simultaneously another camp was also held at Mathania on the same day and that twin will be discussed in a separate post.

Mr. Wasim, our dedicated optometrist, screened 46 patients on the site. Among them, six were found to have mature cataracts. Without delay, they were transported to our base hospital. That very evening, the six underwent successful cataract surgery, each receiving an artificial lens implant completely free of cost. These operations were carried out by our dedicated medical team, strengthened by the tireless volunteer efforts of Dr. Joseph Keenan from Ireland.

What began as routine screening became a life‑changing moment for these patients. In keeping with our mission, sight was restored with dignity, compassion, and at no financial burden to them.

Enjoy the photos from this camp - each captures a tale of compassion and sight reclaimed.
