Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS):
This is a small portable device that delivers electric current to the skin through surface electrodes.

Mechanism of action is based on " Melzack and Wall's gate control theory of pain" [small nociceptive afferents from A-delta and C fibers hold the central "gate" open, whereas stimulation of large afferents from A-beta fibers (carrying touch, pressure and vibration sensations) can close this gate and inhibit transmission of pain signals to the brain].

Commonly used TENS are CONVENTIONAL ( >50Hz) and LOW FREQUENCY/ ACCUPUNCTURE-like TENS (1-10Hz).

Indications:
1. Nociceptive pain- acute, subacute, chronic pain.
2. Neuropathic pain.

Avoid application of electrodes over:
•pericardial area
•near carotid sinus, epiglottis
•over the eyes
•lower back, abdomen and lower extremities of pregnant women
•head and neck in Epilepsy.
