National Institute for Implementation Research on Non-Communicable Diseases ICMR-NIIRNCD, Jodhpur working under ICMR, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Govt of India

The ICMR-National Institute for Implementation Research in Non Communicable Diseases came into existence on 07th December 2019. The institute is located in Jodhpur and it replaces the erstwhile Desert Medicine Research Centre. The institute has state of the art facility to conduct basic laboratory based research in its microbiology, biochemistry and vector biology laboratories. The institute is acquiring manpower and facilities for strengthening it's capacity for conducting implementation research in non- communicable diseases. At present, the institute has a set of 10 dedicated scientists, 9 technical experts, ably supported by 28 administrative and support staff. The thrust areas of research are cardiovascular diseases, chronic respiratory diseases, environmental health, nutritional disorders, cancers, injury & trauma, mental illnesses including substance abuse, genetic diseases and other non-communicable diseases of public health significance in India. The institute aspires to carry out implementation research in the thrust areas, provide training for capacity building in implementation research in other academic and research institutions, develop behavior change communication materials and models for tackling risk factors of various non communicable diseases. The institute heartily welcomes collaboration with institutions and individuals with interest in augmenting the thrust areas.

🔬 One-Day Training Workshop and Hands-on Session on Cardiotocography (CTG)
A one-day training workshop on “Cardiotocography (CTG): Indications, Interpretation, and Referral Pathways” was conducted on 25th February 2026 at MRHRU, Bhanpur Kalan, for Medical Officers, ANMs, and ASHA workers from the attached CHC. The workshop was organized under the aegis of the ICMR–NIIRNCD, Jodhpur, and coordinated by Dr. Janesh Kumar Gautam, Scientist-C, ICMR–NIIRNCD.
Dr. Ashwani Verma, Gynecologist, NIMS University, Jaipur, delivered lectures, provided technical guidance, and led hands-on demonstrations. The training reinforced participants’ competencies in CTG operation, fetal monitoring, identification of high-risk pregnancies, and referral decision-making. Gratitude was extended to Prof. Pankaj Bhardwaj, Director, ICMR–NIIRNCD, for his continued guidance and support in conducting the workshop.

🔬 One-Day Hands-on Workshop on Molecular Biology Techniques & Diagnostic Platforms

We were delighted to host students from the Amity Institute of Biotechnology at MRHRU, Bhanpur Kalan, under the aegis of ICMR-NIIRNCD, Jodhpur, for a one-day hands-on learning experience in molecular biology conducted by Dr. Janesh Gautam.

During the program, students received structured exposure to:
- PCR and qPCR techniques
- The CBNAAT diagnostic platform
- Real-time demonstrations of molecular diagnostic instruments
- Applications of molecular biology tools in public health research and disease surveillance

The active participation, insightful questions, and enthusiasm of the students made the sessions highly interactive and enriching.

ICMR-NIIRNCD, Jodhpur successfully organized a Case-Based Training on Ethical Issues in Biomedical Research to strengthen the decision-making capacity of members of the Institute Ethics Committee under the able leadership of Dr. Pankaj Bhardwaj, Director, ICMR-NIIRNCD, Jodhpur.

The training featured insightful sessions by eminent experts from AIIMS, Jodhpur - Dr. Suresh Sharma, Dr. Jay Karan Charan, Dr. Tanuj Kanchan, Dr. Deepak Sharma, Dr. Rimple Jeet Kaur, Dr. Lokesh Saini, and Dr. Nikha Bhardwaj.

Participants from ICMR-NIIRNCD, Jodhpur, Dr. S.N. Medical College, Jodhpur, and Government Medical College, Pali actively engaged in rich discussions on ethical dilemmas in biomedical research, informed consent, and participant safeguards.

The workshop was effectively coordinated by Dr. P.K. Anand, Scientist-F and Member Secretary, IEC, ICMR-NIIRNCD, Jodhpur. The case-based learning module received widespread appreciation for its practical relevance and interactive approach.

Day 2 of the HTA Workshop Series II: HTA Applied at ICMR–NIIRNCD

Day 2 concluded successfully at ICMR-NIIRNCD with strong engagement from State Health Officers, policymakers, and public health professionals.

The workshop was honored by the gracious presence of Dr. Rajiv Bahl, Secretary, Department Of Health Research, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, and Director General, Indian Council of Medical Research, who shared practical insights on applying HTA to real-world policy decisions and ensuring value for money in public health investments.

We were also privileged to have Smt. Anu Nagar, Additional Secretary, Department Of Health Research, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, who emphasized the importance of institutionalizing Health Technology Assessment (HTA) for evidence-driven policymaking and optimal use of health resources.

Series II has laid a strong foundation in technical skills and practical HTA understanding, providing a clear pathway toward Series III, which will further strengthen hands-on application and state-level implementation of HTA.

Bikaner Technical University (BTU), Bikaner, and ICMR–National Institute for Implementation Research on Non-Communicable Diseases (ICMR–NIIRNCD), Jodhpur, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen collaboration in the fields of healthcare, technology, artificial intelligence, machine learning, renewable energy systems, and cloud computing.
This five-year partnership aims to foster joint research projects, training programmes, academic exchange, and capacity-building initiatives. The collaboration will particularly focus on non-communicable diseases, technology-driven healthcare interventions, and the application of artificial intelligence and machine learning in advancing public health research and outcomes.
The partnership represents a significant step toward promoting integrated, innovative, and evidence-based healthcare research for the broader benefit of society.

We are delighted to host the “Project Review and Future Roadmap” meeting of the project titled: Implementation research for optimising the comprehensive sickle cell anemia care services under national SCA elimination mission.
The project team members from all three sites (ICMR- NIRTH, ICMR- CRMCH & ICMR- NIIRNCD) graced the event with their in-person and virtual presence.
