Key functions of a Dialyzer Reprocessing Unit

1. Cleaning – Removal of blood, clots, and residual dialysate from the dialyzer.

2. Disinfection / Sterilisation – Usually done with chemicals like peracetic acid, formaldehyde (rare now), or automated reprocessing systems.

3. Performance Testing –

Fiber bundle volume (FBV)

Transmembrane pressure check

Leak test
Ensures the dialyzer is safe and efficient for reuse.

I think everyone knows about FOMO, now a new term came out in GenZ world FOFO (fear of finding out).
Let's see how FOFO Affects Patients With CKD (chronic kidney disease)
FOFO is one of the major psychological barriers in early detection and optimal management of CKD. It leads patients to avoid tests, follow-ups, and information because they fear what they may discover.

1. Delayed Diagnosis
Many at-risk patients (diabetes, hypertension, elderly) avoid routine check-ups due to FOFO.
Effect:
CKD is often detected late (Stage 3 or 4).
Missed opportunity for early interventions (BP control, glycemic control, RAAS blockade).

2. Irregular Follow-up
CKD patients with FOFO often skip appointments because they fear:
Rising creatinine
Need for dialysis
Progression to ESRD
Effect:
Poor monitoring of complications (anemia, MBD, acidosis).
Treatment not adjusted in time.

3. Avoidance of Necessary Investigations
Patients avoid tests such as:
Creatinine
eGFR
Urine protein/ACR
Ultrasound
Biopsy
Effect:
Progression goes unnoticed.
Secondary complications become severe before detection.

4. Poor Medication Adherence
FOFO may cause denial:
“If I don’t take medicine, I don’t have kidney disease.”
Fear of lifelong medication.
Effect:
Poor BP control → faster eGFR decline.
Uncontrolled diabetes → more proteinuria.
Worsening CKD.

5. Dietary Non-compliance
Patients may think:
“If I follow a renal diet, it means my kidneys are failing.” This emotional resistance causes avoidance.
Effect:
High salt/phosphate/potassium intake → complications accelerate.

6. Psychological Stress & Denial
FOFO triggers:
Anxiety, emotional paralysis
Denial coping
Catastrophizing (jumping to worst-case scenarios)
Effect:
Reduces patient capacity to engage in self-care.
Leads to emergency presentations rather than planned care.

7. Late Preparation for RRT (Dialysis/Transplant)
Because of fear, patients avoid:
AV fistula planning
Transplant evaluation
Counselling about dialysis
Family discussion
Effect:
Emergency dialysis catheter insertion
Higher mortality
Poorer outcomes
Unplanned initiation → psychological trauma

FOFO → Delayed care → Faster CKD progression → Worse outcomes
