Following the cyclone on March 16th in Kalimpong, where strong winds completely tore off the roof of the rehabilitation center, Mr. Ravi Pradhan, Administrator of Kalimpong Municipality, visited H.A.N.D.S. rehabilitation center. With deep concern, he offered assistance both personally and through his department. This noble gesture was truly appreciated, and the patients and staff were delighted to welcome him, organizing a small program themselves in his honor.

The coordinator attended the annual picnic organized by the Kalimpong NGO Network (KanGON), an umbrella organization of all registered NGOs in the Kalimpong district. Members eagerly anticipated this event throughout the year. Beyond being a source of recreation and entertainment, the picnic serves as a vital opportunity to strengthen bonds between the organizations, fostering unity and ensuring that they remain prepared to respond collectively to major crises or disasters—challenges that no single organization could tackle alone.

The patients and staff of the rehabilitation center recently took part in their annual picnic to Reill Khola (River). This outing was a wonderful opportunity for the patients, providing them with a refreshing break from their daily routine, along with much-needed rejuvenation. These carefully planned activities help them step back, find positivity, and deepen their belief that a life free from substance abuse and alcohol is not only possible but can be fully enjoyed.

We at H.A.N.D.S. were truly blessed to welcome Dr. Geeta Chaudhary, a compassionate psychiatrist from Australia, who engaged with our patients, staff, and interns on mental health and addiction. We were also delighted to have Dr. Rachel Singh, a psychiatrist from New Zealand, who returned to Kalimpong with a heartfelt mission to establish a clinic for our rural communities.

During her visit, Dr. Geeta also spent quality time with several patients currently receiving psychiatric care. She has generously offered to continue video call counselling while she’s away and looks forward to visiting us again when she returns to Kalimpong in April.

When a person spends many years struggling with alcohol and substance abuse, they often become isolated from social events, festivals, and family occasions, deeply engrossed in their own challenges. This disconnection can make them forget the joy and significance of these moments. To help our patients reintegrate into mainstream life, we celebrate national events, festivals, and family occasions within our center. For example, on Republic Day (26th January), our patients participated in the celebrations with the national anthem, games, sports, music, dance, and fun activities like tombola, where they won prizes such as sweets and chocolates. Through these experiences, they gradually learn to cherish and reconnect with the broader community.

To break the daily monotony and rejuvenate our patients, we take them out for early morning walks in the open air. Today was one of those weekly morning walk days, and the patients thoroughly enjoyed the fresh breeze. This not only helps them feel refreshed but also enhances their attentiveness in classes, ultimately contributing to a more successful treatment process.
