Thrissur, August 15, 2025 - The National Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (NIPMR) celebrated India's 79th Independence Day with patriotic fervor. Executive Director Sri C. Chandrababu hoisted the tricolor flag, accompanied by Principal Smt. Anna Danniel, Dr. Soumya, Dr Jyothi Lakshmi, and Administrative Officer Sri Johnson Varghees. Students from the Bachelor of Occupational Therapy (BoT) and Bachelor of Prosthetics and Orthotics (BPO) programs, as well as students from K4 Care and special schools, enthusiastically participated in the event. The in-patients of the Spinal Injury Rehabilitation Unit also attended the ceremony.
This day holds particular importance for NIPMR as it coincides with the founding of the Thresyamma Memorial Hospital in 2005, the precursor to the current institution.

നിപ്മറിൽ അനിമൽ അസിസ്റ്റഡ് തെറാപ്പിയ്ക്ക് തുടക്കം.

സാമൂഹ്യനീതിവകുപ്പിനു കീഴിൽ ഇരിങ്ങാലക്കുട കല്ലേറ്റുംകരയിൽ പ്രവർത്തിക്കുന്ന നാഷണൽ ഇൻസ്റ്റിറ്റ്യൂട്ട് ഓഫ് ഫിസിക്കൽ മെഡിസിൻ ആൻഡ് റീഹാബിലിറ്റേഷനിൽ (NIPMR) അനിമൽ അസിസ്റ്റഡ് തെറാപ്പി ആരംഭിച്ചു.

പരിശീലനം സിദ്ധിച്ച മൃഗങ്ങളുടെ സഹായത്തോടെയുള്ള പുതിയ ചികിത്സാ രീതിയാണ് അനിമൽ അസിസ്റ്റഡ് തെറാപ്പി. നിപ്മറിലെ ഒക്യുപ്പേഷണൽ തെറാപ്പി വിഭാഗത്തിന്റെ നേതൃത്വത്തിലാണ് ഈ നൂതന ചികിത്സാ സമ്പ്രദായം ആരംഭിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്.

നായകൾ, മുയൽ ഉൾപ്പെടെയുള്ള ചെറുമൃഗങ്ങൾ, ആട്, പശു കുതിര ഉൾപ്പടെയുള്ള മറ്റ് മൃഗങ്ങൾ എന്നിവയെ ഉപയോഗിച്ച് തെറാപ്പി ചെയ്യാൻ കഴിയും. തുടക്കം എന്ന നിലയിൽ ഒരു അനിമൽ ട്രെയിനറുടെ നേതൃത്വത്തിൽ പരിശീലനം സിദ്ധിച്ച നായയെയാണ് എല്ലാത്തരം ശുചിത്വ, ആരോഗ്യ, ചികിത്സാ മുൻകരുതലുകൾ പാലിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് തെറാപ്പിക്കായി പ്രയോജനപ്പെടുത്തുന്നത്.

സെൻസറി പ്രശ്നമുള്ള കുട്ടികളുടെ പെരുമാറ്റപ്രശ്നങ്ങൾ പരിഹരിക്കുന്നതിനും കുട്ടികളിലെ ഉത്കണ്ഠ, ഹൈപ്പർ ആക്ടിവിറ്റി, ശ്രദ്ധക്കുറവ് എന്നിവ പരിഹരിക്കുന്നതിനും സാമൂഹ്യ ഇടപെടൽ വർധിപ്പിക്കുന്നതിനും ഈ ചികിത്സാ രീതി ഫലപ്രദമാണ്.

"It is a landmark occasion in the journey of NIPMR—a moment of pride, reflection, and celebration. On July 26, 2025, we achieved a significant academic milestone: the successful graduation of the first cohort of our Bachelor of Occupational Therapy (BOT) program, a pioneering initiative in Kerala.

The foundation for this achievement was laid on January 23, 2017, when the Governing Council of NIPMR took a bold and visionary step to establish an exclusive Department of Occupational Therapy, with the objective of initiating a BOT program under the affiliation of the Kerala University of Health Sciences (KUHS). From conceptualizing the syllabus to navigating the complex processes of academic approvals and affiliations, our journey has been both challenging and deeply rewarding.

With the unwavering support of many stakeholders, the program officially began in the academic year 2020–21, admitting 20 students annually through the LBS admission process. I am immensely proud to share that 16 students from the first batch have successfully completed the program with outstanding performance. All of them have secured placements in reputed therapeutic institutions across the country, and notably, two of our graduates have been admitted for postgraduate studies at premier national institutes—Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai, and SV NIRTAR, Cuttack—through a competitive national entrance exam.

To all our graduating students, congratulations! Your resilience, hard work, and dedication have brought you here, and your achievements are a source of great pride for NIPMR and for the state of Kerala."

NIPMR observed World Environment Day today, June 5, 2025, in a meaningful way by providing training to special school children on making seed balls. These seed balls are prepared by mixing organic manure with clay and inserting seeds inside the clay ball. The children will place the seed-impregnated clay balls in their respective home premises and monitor the germination and growth of the plants, reporting back to the special school with photos and videos. The best-performing children will be rewarded accordingly. This exercise aims to enhance the children's environmental observation skills while offering therapeutic benefits, including sensory enhancement.

Empowerment through Vocationalisation (EmVoc) is a program designed by NIPMR to train youth with disabilities in various skills, enabling them to secure gainful employment in their respective trades. After undergoing skill training, they can engage in either wage employment or self-employment to earn a living. NIPMR also facilitates suitable placements.

As part of the program, parents and students of special schools at NIPMR are encouraged to take up gainful employment activities, such as natural soap making, production of lip balm, kajal, and pickles. They sell these products directly and also through trade fairs and exhibitions.

A recent news report highlights the enthusiasm and commitment shown by a special kid, Sona, with the staunch support of her mother, Bindu, in producing and selling products to customer satisfaction. This news report pertains to NIPMR's participation in the exhibition organized by the Government of Kerala as part of the 'Ente Keralam' program, held from May 18th to 24th at Thekkinkadu Maidanam, Thrissur."

Master Fidel P. S, a forth standard student of a village school penned his first book braving dysgraphia a condition associated with learning disability. Disgraphia is the condition which pose challenges in writing. He has undergone special education classes at NIPMR and weathered his writing difficulties. Being survived his learning difficulties now he wrote his first book camptioned "An unlikely friendship ". Ten year old Fidel is a student of Alathur ALPS near Irijalakkuda. His father is a casual worker at Kerala Feeds Kallettumkara and mother is Shamitha Sunil. He has an younger brother, Sawan studying in 2 nd standard. NIPMR wishes him all success in his future endeavour.

മുതിർന്ന പൗരന്മാരുടെ എണ്ണം കേരളത്തിൽ നാൾക്കുനാൾ വർദ്ധിച്ചുവരികയാണ്. അത് ഉയർത്തുന്ന വെല്ലുവിളികൾ നേരിടാൻ നാം തയ്യാറാകേണ്ടതുണ്ട്. അത്തരം ഒരു തയാറെടുപ്പാണ് സംസ്ഥാനകുടുംബശ്രീ മിഷനും നിപ്മറും ചേർന്ന് നടപ്പാക്കുന്ന കെ ഫോർ കെയർ എക്സിക്യൂട്ടീവ് ട്രെയിനിങ് പ്രോഗ്രാം. മുതിർന്ന പൗരന്മാരെയും കിടപ്പു രോഗികളെയും പരിചരിക്കുന്നതിന് ശാസ്ത്രീയമായി പരിശീലനം സിദ്ധിച്ച ഒരു കേഡറിനെ ഒരുക്കുകയാണ് ഈ പരിപാടിയുടെ ലക്ഷ്യം. കുടുംബശ്രീ തെരെഞ്ഞെടുത്തു നൽകുന്ന 40 വയസ്സിന് താഴെ പ്രായമുള്ള വനിതകൾക്ക് ഒരുമാസം റസിഡന്ഷ്യൽ പരിശീലനം നൽകുന്ന പദ്ധതിയാണിത്. തിയറിയും പ്രായോഗിക പരിശീലനവും അടങ്ങുന്നതാണ് ട്രെയിനിങ് മോഡ്യൂൾ.
ആദ്യ ബാച്ചിന്റെ പരിശീലനം ഇന്ന് പൂർത്തിയായി. സമാപനച്ചടങ്ങിൽ കുടുംബശ്രീ തൃശൂർ ജില്ലാ മിഷൻ കോർഡിനേറ്റർ ഡോ. യു സലിൽ, അസിസ്റ്റന്റ് കോർഡിനേറ്റർ രാധാകൃഷ്ണൻ എന്നിവർ പങ്കെടുത്തു. പരിശീലനച്ചെലവ് പൂർണമായും വഹിക്കുന്നത് കുടുംബശ്രീ മിഷൻ ആണ്. അടുത്ത ബാച്ച് പരിശീലന പരിപാടിയിൽ പങ്കെടുക്കാൻ താല്പര്യമുള്ളവർ അതാത് ജില്ലാകളിലെ കുടുംബശ്രീ മിഷനുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെടാവുന്നതാണ്.
