3D printing is a modern technology widely used in developed countries for designing, developing, and manufacturing a wide range of products—from toys to buildings. The National Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (NIPMR) is the only academic institution in Kerala that imparts professional training in the production of artificial limbs through its Bachelor’s Degree Programme in Prosthetics and Orthotics (BPO). As part of the curriculum, students are trained in the application of 3D printing technology.
To further strengthen technical interventions for Persons with Disabilities, Dr. Mary Anthony presented a 3D printer to NIPMR. The facility will significantly enhance prosthetics and orthotics services and promote the application of advanced technology in disability rehabilitation.
Dr. Mary Anthony is also the Research Guide for the project titled “Aesthetics of Technology” undertaken by engineering students under APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University (KTU). The project team—comprising students from Government Engineering College, Thrissur; Christ College, Irinjalakuda; Sahrdaya College of Engineering; and MITS, Kochi—is working in close association with NIPMR.
Dr. R. Bindu, Hon’ble Minister for Higher Education and Social Justice, congratulated Dr. Mary Anthony for her philanthropic gesture, which will greatly enhance the use of modern technology in the field of disability studies and rehabilitation.
