3D printing is a modern technology widely used in developed countries for designing, developing, and manufacturing a wide range of products—from toys to buildings. The National Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (NIPMR) is the only academic institution in Kerala that imparts professional training in the production of artificial limbs through its Bachelor’s Degree Programme in Prosthetics and Orthotics (BPO). As part of the curriculum, students are trained in the application of 3D printing technology.
To further strengthen technical interventions for Persons with Disabilities, Dr. Mary Anthony presented a 3D printer to NIPMR. The facility will significantly enhance prosthetics and orthotics services and promote the application of advanced technology in disability rehabilitation.
Dr. Mary Anthony is also the Research Guide for the project titled “Aesthetics of Technology” undertaken by engineering students under APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University (KTU). The project team—comprising students from Government Engineering College, Thrissur; Christ College, Irinjalakuda; Sahrdaya College of Engineering; and MITS, Kochi—is working in close association with NIPMR.
Dr. R. Bindu, Hon’ble Minister for Higher Education and Social Justice, congratulated Dr. Mary Anthony for her philanthropic gesture, which will greatly enhance the use of modern technology in the field of disability studies and rehabilitation.

For the sustenance of life, air, water, and food are indispensable. In human beings, the mouth forms the gateway to the digestive system, making oral health a matter of paramount importance. Oral hygiene is vital not only for maintaining systemic health but also for preserving facial aesthetics and clarity of speech. It is often said that toothache is among the most severe forms of pain; hence, the responsibility of every individual is to maintain teeth and gums in a clean and healthy condition.

In discussions on dental health, the topics of dental care and dental hospitals naturally arise. According to the World Health Organization, the ideal ratio is one dentist for every 7,500 people. In Kerala, the ratio is significantly better, with one dentist for every 2,200 people, whereas at the national level it is one dentist for every 10,000 people. However, it would be incorrect to assume that an increase in the number of doctors alone guarantees improved health. A variety of social factors, beyond the hospital–doctor–medicine framework, contribute to determining health outcomes. Which is called the social determinants of health.

Despite facilities that exceed international standards, a considerable section of society continues to be deprived of dental care services. Among the most affected are persons with disabilities, particularly children. Factors such as fear of dental instruments, resistance to sitting in a dental chair, inability to remain seated due to physical limitations, and restlessness often hinder their access to treatment. Additionally, the reluctance of practitioners to undertake the risks associated with treating such children further aggravates the issue.

In response to these challenges, NIPMR has been successfully managing a dedicated dental unit for the past three years. Parents from various regions in Kerala have utilized its services for the treatment needs of their children with disabilities. To share the insights and experiences gained in this field with other dental professionals, a training programme was recently organized at NIPMR.

The programme was inaugurated on 20 September 2025 at the NIPMR Auditorium by Dr. Ashish R, Dean of Student Affairs, Kerala University of Health Sciences. The inaugural session also featured addresses by Dr. Jayaprakash and Ms. Anna Daniel, Principal, NIPMR.

Expert sessions were conducted by Dr. Iqbal V.M. (Thrissur Dental College), Pediatrician Dr. Keerthi S., Pedodontist Dr. Ranju Raj, and Dr. Chitra Bose. Approximately 50 doctors and students from various colleges participated.
