January – Birth Defects Prevention Month Message from Dr. Rohit Jain, Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeon, Kalyan / Thane
Birth Defects Prevention Month reminds us that many congenital conditions can be avoided with proper maternal care. Yet some children are born with orthopedic birth defects such as clubfoot, hip dysplasia, limb deformities, or spinal curvature. These conditions can affect mobility, growth, and confidence if not treated early.
According to ICMR data, orthopedic anomalies account for nearly 1 in 4 congenital defects in India. Dr. Rohit Jain, a leading child bone and joint specialist, emphasizes that while prevention begins before birth—with good nutrition, folic acid, and antenatal care—early diagnosis after birth is equally critical. With timely treatment, braces, physiotherapy, or corrective surgery, most children can grow up to walk, run, and play normally.
Parents should remember birth defects are not destiny. With awareness, medical guidance, and early orthopedic care, children can overcome challenges and lead healthy, active lives.
Remember, it is a misconception that young babies cannot undergo surgery and hence either delay or accept it as fate. Dr. Rohit Jain urges parents to consult their doctor for any abnormalities detected right from prenatal screenings and follow up immediately after childbirth. The earlier, the better for improved outcomes.
