Journal of Pioneering Medical Sciences

Journal of Pioneering Medical Sciences JPMS is an international, peer reviewed, and medical research journal. JPMS Medical Blogs publishes ***Journal of Poineering Medical Sciences (J Pioneer Med Sci.

ISSN: 2309-7981)***
It is the first international, student initiated journal from Pakistan. It’s an open access and peer reviewed journal with quarterly publication on the web. First issue to be available on 1st April 2011.International students are welcomed to contribute to the journal. Anyone can submit an article since being from Pakistan and a medical student is not mandatory. Scope and Vision

:

The present era is witnessing tremendous growth of scientific literature. It’s estimated that 6-7% of new literature is added every year, which means that the available knowledge will double in the next ten years and grow by 10 fold in the fifty years. The question arises that how much Pakistan is contributing to the medical literature. To address this issue and give a platform to the new investigators of Pakistan and other countries, JPMS was formed. “Journal of Pakistan Medical Students” (JPMS) is the first online, peer-reviewed medical journal initiated by Pakistani medical students. It aims to provide a forum not only to medical students but also to doctors for publication of their articles, discussion on important medical topics, assistance and guidance to students intending a foreign electives experience, bridging the gaps and promoting communication between medical students. The journal is not confined to the medical students and to medical students only. Anyone can contribute. JPMS welcomes any topic related to medical sciences, dental medicine and nursing as well. Long term goals include provision of high quality research papers and creating a students’ journal indexed by reputed indexation services.

***JPMS Medical Blogs – For Medical Professionals and General Public***

JPMS Medical Blogs is an initiative to provide a platform for students, doctors, professionals, general public and the policy makers where they can discuss updates pertaining to medical literature and healthcare related issues. The sub-continent has many medical blogs; however, the authenticity of the information posted there is always a question. Each article published in JPMS Medical Blogs has to be reviewed by two practicing doctors, one of which is an editor from JPMS to ensure that the information is medically correct. Since JPMS is a supporting organization of Healthcare Information For All by 2015 (HIFA 2015), an organization based in UK, it affirms the objectives of free healthcare information for everyone. Developing countries have limited access to research journals. If correct and accurate information is given to doctors from developing countries, their need for scientific knowledge can be addressed through this blog. Moreover, it presents research in a simple language so that common people and doctors, who do not have much knowledge and understanding of the statistical methods, can benefit from scientific literature.

Orphan Drugs and Rare Diseases: Challenges and Importance

Orphan drugs are medications developed to treat rare diseases that affect a small number of people compared to the general population.

These diseases are often genetic, chronic, and life-threatening. However, developing and accessing orphan drugs poses significant challenges:

Challenges in Development:

- Small patient populations make it difficult to conduct clinical trials

- High costs associated with research and development.

- Lack of financial incentives for pharmaceutical companies

Challenges in Access:

- High prices due to the small market and high development costs

- Limited insurance coverage and reimbursement for orphan drugs

-Geographical barriers in accessing treatment, especially in developing countries

Importance of Orphan Drugs:

- Provide hope and treatment options for those with rare diseases

- Advance scientific understanding and research in rare disease fields

- Encourage innovation and collaboration in the pharmaceutical industry

To overcome these challenges, governments, patient advocates, and the pharmaceutical industry must work together to streamline the development process, improve access to treatment, and ensure that those with rare diseases have the same opportunities for quality healthcare as everyone else.

Have you ever heard of the placebo and nocebo effects? These fascinating phenomena demonstrate the incredible influence our minds can have on our bodies.

🟢 Placebo Effect:

- Occurs when a fake treatment, like a sugar pill, improves a patient's condition simply because they expect it to work.

- The brain releases feel-good chemicals like endorphins, which can reduce pain and improve symptoms.

- Placebo effects are commonly seen in clinical trials and can be as powerful as actual medications.

🔴 Nocebo Effect:

- The opposite of the placebo effect, where negative expectations lead to worsening of symptoms or new symptoms.

- Thinking a treatment will cause side effects can make those side effects appear, even if the treatment is harmless.

- Nocebo effects can be triggered by verbal suggestions, like "this might hurt a bit," or by observing others' negative reactions.

The mind-body connection is strong, and understanding the placebo and nocebo effects can help us harness the power of positive thinking for better health outcomes.
