Swipe Right to see the surgical journey of female Shihtzu.
The female shihtzu was presented with chronic long standing hematuria (blood in urine), abdominal pain.
The xray revealed a massive urolith (urinary stone) in the urinary bladder.

A prompt decision was made to do surgery to remove the urolith. The dog was neutered as well on the day of surgery.

The patient made full recovery without any post operative complications.

Reptile Feeding Tube

We will routinely use feeding tubes in tortoises or terrapins or turtles that are not eating well even though some reptiles can go many days without eating. The tube can be used to administer food, water, and medication for an extended period of time.

Sometimes they are not eating due to a traumatic injury or internal illness. Other times they might be recovering from surgery.

This post will show you how we put a feeding tube into a sedated Red Eared Slider.
Step 1:
In reptiles the esophagus is found towards the right side of the neck. A hemostat has been passed through its oral cavity into the esophagus at the point where the feeding tube will be inserted. Do you see the hemostat as it bulges just under the skin in the center of the photo number 3?
Step 2:
A nick is made in the skin with a scalpel blade right over the bulge. This allows the hemostat to gently advance through the wall of the esophagus and the skin to the outside. Photo number 4.
Step 3:
The hemostat is used to grab the tip of the feeding tube. The hemostat and feeding tube will be pulled back out through the oral cavity.
It is not possible to just pass the tube down into the esophagus at this point in the procedure, it must first come out through the mouth and then be passed down into the esophagus.
Step 4:
The x-ray of the terrapin on its back shows how the tub looks like on the inside.
The tube is sutured at its insertion point into the esophagus and the remainder of the tube is taped to the top of the shell.

When you first bring home your new pet, one of the best ways to give them a healthy start is to spay or neuter them. Spaying or neutering will benefit your pet medically and behaviorally.
Spaying and neutering can prevent many treatable diseases including breast cancer, prostatitis, and pyometra (uterine infection). It also reduces the risk of benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate that comes with age) and eliminates the risk of testicular cancer, which is actually the second most common cancer to affect unneutered dogs.
In general, dogs that are neutered live longer, which is always good news for pet owners.

Dental Problems in Hamsters
Since their incisors grow throughout life, hamsters commonly develop overgrown incisors that may get so long that they interfere with closing the mouth to eat. Overgrown incisors also can poke into the gums and tongue, causing cuts and bleeding. If both upper and lower incisors overgrow, they may hit each other when the hamster tries to close its mouth, breaking off and causing pain.
To lessen the chance of developing overgrown incisors, pet hamsters should be given they should be fed a balanced diet of commercially available, nutritionally complete rodents pellets, supplemented with small amounts of fresh produce, and seed only as an occasional treat. Balanced nutrition in hamsters helps them develop strong bones and teeth, just as it does in people.
Hamsters with overgrown teeth may need to have these teeth trimmed or surgically extracted. Those with tooth root or cheek pouch impactions/abscesses or oral-nasal fistulas typically need surgery, antibiotics, and pain killers to remove impactions/abscesses, close fistulas and treat infection.
