Hyperinflated lungs are a distressing consequence of blockages or reduced elasticity in the air passages. This condition, often seen in individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), afflicts countless lives in India. With a staggering 55 million COPD cases reported in 2019, the burden is overwhelming, especially in rural areas with limited healthcare resources and financial constraints. Portable diagnostic solutions are required to empower healthcare professionals to deliver vital care to those in need in remote areas. By utilizing X-ray imaging, we can alleviate the suffering caused by hyperinflation and ensure a brighter future for those affected by this debilitating condition.

Pleural effusion, a growing problem in India, inflicts unimaginable suffering and excruciating pain upon its victims. The burden of tuberculosis and other diseases only adds to its relentless rise. Heartbreakingly, this study reveals that tuberculosis is the leading cause of pleural effusion (64.67%), followed by malignancy (14.67%), parapneumonic effusion (7.33%), cardiac failure (5.33%), and other minor causes. Overwhelmingly, it affects males (70%). The symptoms, like gasping for air and enduring agonizing chest pain, render life unbearable for these afflicted souls. Yet, a glimmer of hope lies in timely diagnosis and treatment. X-rays, with their ability to unveil fluid accumulation and shed light on underlying causes, become a lifeline. They provide glimpses into the severity of pneumonia, empowering healthcare professionals to administer appropriate treatments.

This weekend we were honored with the presence of DR Rajiv Bahl, Secretary to the Government of India, Department of Health Research and Director General, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) in our lab at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur. The visitors were delighted to watch the prototype handheld X-ray system under operation and the research done for the same. This visit was part of a two-day long event at IIT Kanpur where the work going on related to the research and development of medical technologies and devices was presented. All thanks to Startup Incubation and Innovation Centre, IIT Kanpur, we got this opportunity to showcase our work and to better understand the needs of Indian healthcare from the perspective of its stakeholders.

Pneumonia, a relentless menace, continues its grip on India, fuelled by the suffocating cocktail of overcrowding, pollution, and limited healthcare access. It accounts for around 14% of all deaths of children under 5 years old globally. Many organizations around the globe including WHO, UNICEF, Bill, and Melinda Gates Foundation, and the like are working towards the prevention and treatment of Pneumonia. India accounts for 23% of the global pneumonia burden with a case fatality rate ranging from 14 to 30%. The general strategy to tackle this fatal infection includes protecting children by promoting measures like exclusive breastfeeding, vaccinations, improving hygiene, and providing adequate treatment by ensuring access to the right kind of care. Chest X-ray is one of the means of diagnosis for this infection including other ways like Blood tests, sputum culture, pulse oximetry, chest CT scan, etc. Let us unite, hand in hand, to defeat this silent killer and grant every child the breath of life they deserve.

On World No To***co Day, let us confront the harsh reality of to***co's devastating impact on our health. To***co use leaves a trail of destruction, triggering diseases like lung cancer and COPD. Once these diseases reach a critical stage there is no coming back. Early detection through public screenings, particularly in low-resource settings, can help monitor and address the deteriorating public health caused by to***co. Portable X-ray machines and digital advancements enable swift diagnosis, while Telemedicine brings expert care within reach, bridging distances. Join us in raising awareness and celebrating the life-saving potential of early diagnosis through point-of-care X-ray imaging. Together, we can overcome the grip of to***co and triumph over its harmful effects.

Emphysema poses significant challenges in India with over 18 million cases of COPD reported in 2019. Limited awareness, underdiagnosis, and inadequate healthcare infrastructure contribute to the difficulties. Diagnosis primarily relies on clinical evaluation and spirometry tests, with limited availability of chest X-rays. To address these issues, the government has implemented initiatives such as NPCDCS, PM-JAY, and RNTCP to tackle respiratory diseases, including emphysema. However, there is a need for increased awareness, improved accessibility to diagnostic tools, and strengthened healthcare infrastructure. These endeavours aim to ensure timely and accurate diagnosis and treatment for individuals suffering from emphysema in India.

The national mortality rate for first-time heart attacks in India is 15-20%, resulting in approximately 120,000 to 200,000 deaths, compared to 4-5% in developed countries. An enlarged heart, known as cardiomegaly, is a significant predictor of heart failure, along with other indicators like flow cephalization, pleural effusion, and pulmonary edema. However, limited awareness and healthcare accessibility pose obstacles to timely diagnosis. Challenges include delayed recognition, insufficient facilities, and a lack of diagnostic tools. Detecting these conditions and indicators through chest X-rays is crucial for preventing potential heart failure. Raising awareness, improving healthcare infrastructure, and enhancing diagnostic capabilities are essential for early identification and reducing heart failure cases in India.

As we celebrate Mother's Day, it's important to remember the significance of quality antenatal care in supporting women as they prepare to become mothers. Every pregnant woman should receive at least one ultrasound before 24 weeks of gestation, as recommended by WHO. However, women living in rural areas or resource-limited settings often lack access to this vital modality. Point of Care Ultrasound (PoCUS) has the potential to make ultrasound more accessible and affordable, but its adoption requires breakthroughs in technology, awareness, and delivery framework. Let's honor mothers everywhere by advocating for better access to antenatal care, including innovative solutions like PoCUS, to ensure that all mothers receive the care they deserve.

Happy Mother's Day!

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), India continues to have the highest burden of TB globally, with an estimated 2.5 million cases in 2020. It is a significant public health problem in India, and chest X-rays are often used to detect and monitor TB in the country due to a shortage of qualified healthcare professionals and a lack of access to diagnostic tools. Currently, India is working to eradicate TB by 2025 under the National TB elimination program. One major requirement for the eradication is mass screening for TB in remote areas where the healthcare diagnosis can not normally reach so that further treatment can be delivered.

The Indian medical imaging device market is expected to reach USD 2.7 billion by 2026, growing at a CAGR of 8.8%. The market is highly fragmented with the X-ray device segment being the largest. The increasing demand for healthcare services, the growing elderly population, and the prevalence of chronic diseases are driving the growth of the market. The market is highly competitive, and ongoing research and development are expected to play an important role in enabling doctors to provide more accurate diagnoses and treatments for a wide range of health conditions.

Lenek Technologies is dedicated to improving accessibility and affordability of medical diagnosis by developing technologies that can take healthcare to the masses. Boehringer Ingelheim has recently joined hands with Startup Incubation and Innovation Centre, IIT Kanpur, and supporting us in our mission as well.
