Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a progressive genetic condition which affects the muscles, causing muscle weakness. It is a serious condition which starts in early childhood.

Physiotherapy is essential to the management of Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Physiotherapists work with the parents and provide them with information and manual skills that will be helpful for the child. It is important to identify the following impairments, activity limitations, or participation restrictions to be addressed by physical therapy in:

*Impaired strength and range of motion
*Decreased functional mobility, transfers and gait.
*Limitation in functional abilities
*Impaired respiratory function
*Apparent or potential spinal deformities
*Emotional trauma of the individual and the family.
The physical therapy goals are to prolong function by maintaining capacity of the child for activities of daily living (ADL) and to involve the child in play, to prevent deformity, to control discomfort and to assist in supporting the family.
