A health talk on the topic “Hypertension and Its Prevention” was conducted at the OPD area of UPHC Ramnagar under the supervision of Mr Sunil. The session was organized to create awareness among the general public, especially middle-aged and elderly individuals, about the causes, complications, and preventive measures of high blood pressure (hypertension).
The talk focused on the following key points:

1. What is Hypertension
• Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is a condition where the force of blood against the artery walls is consistently too high.
• It is often called the “silent killer” because it may not show symptoms until serious complications arise.
• Normal blood pressure is less than 120/80 mmHg.

2. Causes and Risk Factors
• Unhealthy diet (excess salt, junk food, saturated fats)
• Lack of physical activity
• Obesity or overweight
• Stress and anxiety
• Excessive alcohol intake and smoking
• Family history of hypertension
• Certain medical conditions like diabetes and kidney disease

3. Complications of Uncontrolled Hypertension
On General Health:
• Heart diseases – heart attack, heart failure
• Stroke and paralysis
• Kidney damage (renal failure)
• Vision problems (hypertensive retinopathy)
• Memory loss or dementia
During Pregnancy:
• Preeclampsia and eclampsia (high blood pressure with protein in urine)
• Premature delivery or low birth weight baby
• Increased risk to mother and baby’s health

4. Prevention and Management
• Reduce salt intake – use less salt while cooking and avoid processed foods
• Eat a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains
• Maintain a healthy weight
• Exercise regularly – at least 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week
• Avoid smoking and alcohol
• Manage stress through yoga, meditation, or relaxation techniques
• Regular blood pressure check-ups – early detection and management are key
• Take prescribed medications regularly if diagnosed with hypertension
