A Health Camp coupled with a Blood Donation Drive was successfully organized for the employees of Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) at the IOCL Regional Office, Jammu, on 19th January, 2026. The initiative aimed to promote preventive healthcare, facilitate early diagnosis, and encourage voluntary blood donation among employees.

The health camp witnessed enthusiastic participation from IOCL employees, who availed specialist medical consultations across key disciplines. Dr. Kritika, Ophthalmologist, examined 34 beneficiaries, providing comprehensive eye check-ups along with guidance on eye care and preventive measures. Dr. Ashwani Kumar, Specialist in Internal Medicine, also consulted 34 employees, offering clinical evaluations, health assessments, and medical advice related to general and lifestyle-associated health concerns.

As an integral component of the programme, a Blood Donation Drive was organized, which received an encouraging response from the employees. A total of 10 units of blood were successfully collected during the drive. The donated blood will significantly contribute towards strengthening blood bank reserves and supporting patients in need of transfusion services.

The camp was conducted smoothly with well-coordinated arrangements, ensuring comfort and convenience for all participants. The beneficiaries expressed their appreciation for the initiative and emphasized the importance of such workplace-based health programmes in promoting employee well-being and social responsibility.

Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence Conducts Hands-on BLS Training at District Hospital, Reasi:

Under the able leadership of Dr. Yashpal Sharma, Executive Director, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence (SMVDIME), Kakryal, a Basic Life Support (BLS) hands-on training workshop was successfully conducted on 19th January, 2026 at District Hospital, Reasi. The programme was organized in association with Dr. Gopal Dutt Sharma, Medical Superintendent, District Hospital Reasi, highlighting inter-institutional collaboration aimed at strengthening emergency medical services at the district level.

The workshop was designed to enhance practical skills and clinical preparedness in the management of life-threatening emergencies. A total of 35 healthcare personnel participated in the programme, including Medical Officers, Consultants, Paramedical Staff, and Nursing Students posted in the Emergency Department. The training focused on reinforcing core principles of basic life support with an emphasis on real-time application in emergency settings.

The hands-on training sessions were conducted by experienced faculty members and also certificate BLS AHA Certified trainer from SMVDIME, namely Dr. Abhimanyu Sharma, Associate Professor, Department of Pathology; Dr. Anuj Kapoor, Assistant Professor, Department of Community Medicine; and Dr. Vikaram Sharma, Senior Resident, Department of Pharmacology. The trainers provided structured demonstrations and supervised practical sessions to ensure effective skill acquisition by all participants.

The workshop received positive feedback from the attendees, who found the training highly relevant and beneficial for day-to-day emergency care. Lifesaving Skills in Action: SMVDIME Trains Arogya Bharti Volunteers:

A Basic Life Support (BLS) and First Aid training programme was conducted for district-level teams of Arogya Bharti from Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh to strengthen community response during medical emergencies and promote timely lifesaving interventions.

The training was delivered by a medical team from Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence (SMVDIME), led by Dr. Yashpal Sharma, Executive Director, along with Dr. Abhimanyu Sharma, Dr. Anuj Kapoor, and Dr. Vikram Sharma, combining focused theoretical inputs with hands-on BLS demonstrations.

Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence (SMVDIME) successfully organized a Free Health Check-Up Camp on 24th December, 2025 at The Home for Aged & Infirm (Vridh Ashram), Amphalla, Jammu, with the objective of providing accessible, comprehensive, and quality healthcare services to elderly and infirm residents.

The camp was conducted in collaboration with Mission Shakti – District Hub for Empowerment of Women, Jammu, and the Department of Social Welfare, reflecting strong inter-departmental coordination and a shared commitment towards community welfare and inclusive healthcare delivery.

A total of 70 beneficiaries, predominantly senior citizens, availed medical services during the camp. The initiative emphasized early disease detection, preventive healthcare, and timely medical consultation for age-related health conditions.

The camp was supported by a multidisciplinary medical team from SMVDIME, comprising:
• Dr. Malvika Sharma (Ophthalmology), who screened 41 patients, of whom 7 were referred for further specialized ophthalmic evaluation.
• Dr. Ankita Sharma (Internal Medicine), who examined 29 patients, with one patient advised referral for advanced medical management.

To ensure comprehensive diagnostic and preventive care, the following investigations were conducted on-site:
• 7 Electrocardiograms (ECGs)
• 30 laboratory investigations
• 11 mammography screenings

These diagnostic services contributed significantly to the early identification of non-communicable diseases and other health conditions commonly affecting the elderly population.

The management of the Vridh Ashram, beneficiaries, and associated departments expressed their appreciation for SMVDIME’s initiative and its commitment to social responsibility and compassionate healthcare delivery. A Free Hearing Screening Camp was successfully organized on 20th December, 2025 by Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence at Narayana Multispeciality Clinic, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu, with the objective of promoting early detection and awareness of hearing-related disorders across all age groups.
The camp benefitted a total of 182 patients, including children, adults, and senior citizens, reflecting wide community participation. The screening was conducted by Dr. Rohan Gupta, who, along with his medical team, ensured comprehensive evaluation and professional guidance for all attendees.
As part of the camp, free diagnostic hearing tests were conducted, including Pure Tone Audiometry (PTA), Impedance Audiometry, and Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE). These tests helped in the early identification of hearing impairments and provided patients with valuable insights into their auditory health.
The program was formally inaugurated by Shri Vikram Randhawa, Hon’ble MLA, Bahu Constituency (J&K), who appreciated the efforts of the organizers in bringing essential healthcare services closer to the community. In his address, he emphasized the importance of preventive healthcare and early diagnosis, particularly in hearing-related conditions that often go unnoticed.

Communication and Empathy Training Programme for Nursing Staff:

A Communication Skills and Empathy Training Programme was successfully conducted for nursing staff, with 50 participants trained across three batches from 19 to 22 December 2025. The programme was designed to strengthen patient-centred communication and enhance empathetic engagement in healthcare delivery.

The training comprised expert-led sessions focusing on the importance of effective communication, empathy in healthcare, non-verbal communication, and breaking bad news using the SPIKES model. The sessions were delivered by the Executive Director, SMVDIME, Dr. Yashpal Sharma, and Dr. Anki Reddy J, In-charge Medical Superintendent, who shared valuable insights drawn from real-life clinical and administrative experiences, alongside Ms. Anchal (HR) & Ms. Akanksha (Educator).

Interactive discussions, case-based learning, and practical illustrations formed the core teaching methodology, enabling participants to translate theoretical concepts into day-to-day clinical practice. A comprehensive health camp was successfully organised by Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence at Headquarters STC, BSF, Dhar Road Udhampur on 18th December, 2025. The camp was conducted under the aegis of the Department of Gynaecology and Obstetrics, with the objective of promoting women’s health and ensuring timely medical screening and guidance.
The camp was conducted by Dr. Geetu Mahajan, Associate Professor, Department of Gynaecology and Obstetrics, who carried out systematic health screening of female beneficiaries. A total of 35 females were examined during the camp. Following clinical evaluation, 7 female beneficiaries from the Border Security Force (BSF) were identified for further medical evaluation and follow-up, underscoring the importance of early detection and preventive healthcare.
The initiative was well-organised and witnessed active participation from the beneficiaries, who expressed satisfaction with the medical services and professional guidance provided. Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence (SMVDIME) has successfully initiated its Family Adoption Program (FAP) with the objective of strengthening community-oriented medical education and delivering comprehensive primary healthcare services at the grassroots level.

The allotment of families under the program was carried out on 11th December 2025 at Village Panthal, in the gracious presence of Dr. Yashpal Sharma, Executive Director, SMVDIME. The event marked a significant milestone in fostering close, sustained, and meaningful interaction between medical professionals and the local community. Under this initiative, families were formally adopted to ensure continuous healthcare support, preventive services, health education, and regular follow-up.

Subsequently, a follow-up visit was conducted on 18th December 2025, during which the medical team revisited the adopted families to assess their health status, identify prevalent health issues, and reinforce health awareness and preventive measures. The visit also emphasized understanding the social and environmental determinants of health, thereby ensuring a holistic and patient-centered approach to community well-being.

The Family Adoption Program is being coordinated by Dr. Richa Mahajan, Associate Professor (Community Medicine) and In-Charge, Family Adoption Program. The entire Department of Community Medicine actively participated and contributed to the smooth and effective implementation of the initiative. The team included Dr. Shalini Sobti (Professor & Head, Community Medicine), Dr. Sana Rafiq (Assistant Professor), Dr. Anuj Kapoor (Assistant Professor), and Dr. Ritika Chalotra (Senior Resident), whose collective efforts ensured effective community engagement and quality service delivery.

The program also received valuable support from the local administration. Health Talk on ENT Concerns of the Elderly Marks National Pensioners’ Day:

On the occasion of the 43rd National Pensioners’ Day, a health awareness talk on “ENT Concerns of the Elderly” was organized for members of the Central Government Pensioners’ Welfare Association, Jammu on 18th December, 2025. The session was delivered by Dr. Rohan Gupta, Assistant Professor, Dept. of ENT, SMVDIME, who addressed common ear, nose, and throat issues affecting senior citizens, including hearing loss, balance disorders, and age-related throat and nasal problems. The talk was highly interactive and well appreciated by the participants. Around 85 senior citizens attended the program. The event was graced by Shri Atal Dulloo, IAS, Chief Secretary, J&K UT, as the Chief Guest. The initiative helped raise awareness about the early identification and timely management of ENT problems among the elderly, emphasizing the importance of preventive healthcare and healthy aging.

J&K charts major expansion plan of health services with NITI Aayog

Aayog assures full support for its time bound implementation

JAMMU, DECEMBER 18: In a major push towards strengthening and expanding healthcare delivery across Jammu and Kashmir, a comprehensive roadmap for health sector reforms was today discussed by the Health & Medical Education Department with Dr. V.K. Paul, Member, NITI Aayog, in the presence of Chief Secretary, Atal Dulloo.

The high-level interaction focused on strategic interventions, technological integration, academic collaboration, and capacity augmentation aimed at ensuring equitable, accessible, and quality healthcare services across all districts of the UT.

The meeting was attended by the Secretary, Health & Medical Education Department; Managing Director, National Health Mission; Director, SKIMS; Principals of Government Medical Colleges; Executive Director, SMVDIME; Director Health Services, Jammu/Kashmir; CEO, State Health Agency, besides other senior officers.
Addressing the meeting, Dr. V.K. Paul assured the UT of NITI Aayog’s full support in strengthening institutional capacities and developing human resources. He advised the Department to implement the healthcare expansion plan through a clearly defined hub-and-spoke model, with institutions frozen for specific roles and responsibilities. Emphasizing structured ex*****on, he called for clearly detailing institutional activities to ensure time-bound progress toward predefined goals.

Dr. Paul also stressed the need for a flexible and collaborative framework, enabling institutions to seek support from one another and adopt best practices nationally. He urged the Department to go beyond the Terms of Reference of the high-level committee constituted by the UT and explore the establishment of advanced facilities such as Eye Banks, strengthening Forensic Medicine, and upgrading Emergency and Trauma Care services across healthcare institutions.

Calling for a pragmatic yet ambitious approach, Dr. Paul assured that NITI Aayog would facilitate linkages with premier national institutions and provide expert guidance to help J&K achieve its healthcare objectives.

On the occasion, Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo sought NITI Aayog’s guidance on strategies to retain senior faculty in medical colleges, attract talent from outside the UT, and extend specialized healthcare services to far-flung, mountainous, and border areas.

He also acknowledged NITI Aayog’s crucial role in guiding the UT’s health sector reforms, particularly over the past few months, which resulted in the addition of dozens of postgraduate seats and hundreds of MBBS seats across medical colleges in J&K.

The Secretary, Health & Medical Education Department, Dr Syed Abid Rashid Shah presented a comprehensive overview of the initiatives undertaken following sustained consultations with Dr. Paul over the past several months.

He outlined progress in expanding tertiary healthcare services to district hospitals, augmentation of UG, PG, and DNB seats, and development of a robust governance framework. He also detailed the proposed roles, responsibilities, accountability mechanisms, monitoring and evaluation systems, and implementation timelines.

The Executive Director, SMVDIME, Dr.Yashpal Sharma, made a detailed presentation on the proposed healthcare interventions envisaged with active support from NITI Aayog.

Key interventions deliberated during the meeting included the strengthening of critical care services through Tele-ICU rollout in government hospitals under a hub-and-spoke model. It was revealed during this meeting that the Tele-ICU tender, vetted by Team NITI Aayog, has already been floated. To address diagnostic gaps, particularly in peripheral and underserved areas, the UT also plans to implement Tele-Radiology services, for which the tender is in the final stages.

The Health Department is also exploring the establishment of a Dentistry Department, while the creation of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and Pedodontics departments in newly established GMCs is under active consideration, the meeting was informed.

Dr. Paul was further apprised about the constitution of a high-level committee tasked with devising collaborative models among AIIMS Jammu, SKIMS Soura, GMC Jammu, GMC Srinagar, and the newly established GMCs. The committee was tasked to focus on cardiology, cancer care, mental health, telemedicine, tele-radiology, and academic integration, including enhancement of UG, PG, and DNB training capacities.

The Department also sought NITI Aayog’s assistance in taking up the matter with the National Medical Commission (NMC) for designating District Hospitals as Associated Hospitals of Government Medical Colleges, a move aimed at improving clinical exposure and decentralizing healthcare delivery.

Detailed deliberations were also held on strengthening Drug De-addiction, Mental Health, and Social Health priorities, with a draft action plan titled “Circle of Care”, prepared by Dr. Arshad Hussain, Professor of Psychiatry, GMC Srinagar, submitted to NITI Aayog for its consideration.

In another major development, facilitated by NITI Aayog, it was learnt that the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS) has agreed to provide training to transplant teams along with continued technical support and mentoring. In this regard, a formal request has been submitted by the Health & Medical Education Department seeking support for establishing Liver Transplant facilities in the UT.

The meeting concluded with a reaffirmation of NITI Aayog’s continued guidance and support in transforming Jammu & Kashmir’s healthcare landscape through technology-driven solutions, academic collaboration, and systemic capacity building, ensuring accessible, affordable, and quality healthcare for its citizens across the length and breadth of the UT.
