Hystero-Salpingography (HSG)
-----------------------------
Hysterosalpingography (HSG) is a specialized, fluoroscopic X-ray procedure used to visualize the inside of the uterus and fallopian tubes. Primarily used to evaluate infertility, it detects uterine abnormalities and tubal blockages by injecting contrast dye.
The procedure is usually scheduled 7–10 days after the menstrual period starts.
Purpose and BenefitsDiagnoses Infertility: Determines if fallopian tubes are blocked (patency) or if the uterus has structural issues like polyps, fibroids, or adhesions.
Therapeutic Value: The procedure can sometimes clear minor blockages caused by mucus or dead cells.
Assesses Structure: Shows the shape of the uterine cavity (uterine cavity should be triangular) and identifies congenital malformations Procedure.
DetailsTiming: Performed in the first half of the menstrual cycle (pre-ovulation) to avoid interrupting a pregnancy.
Method: A thin catheter is inserted through the va**na and cervix, and a water-soluble dye is injected into the uterus.
Imaging: A radiologist uses fluoroscopy to take real-time X-rays as the dye fills the uterus, fills the tubes, and spills into the peritoneal cavity if the tubes are open.
Duration: The imaging part usually takes 5-10 minutes.
Risks and Side EffectsCramping: Mild to moderate uterine cramping is common.
Rare Complications: Infections, spotting, or rare allergic reactions to the dye.
Radiation: The procedure uses a small dose of ionizing radiation.
Preparation and Aftercare Preparation: Patients should inform their doctor of iodine allergies or potential infection.
Pain Management: Taking ibuprofen or similar pain relief before the procedure can reduce discomfort.
Follow-up: Some doctors may recommend holding in*******se for a few days.
Disclaimer: Consult a healthcare professional to determine if an HSG is necessary based on your specific health needs.
