The Department of Optometry under the School of Allied Medical Sciences, University of Science & Technology Meghalaya, successfully organized OPTOCON 2.0 on the occasion of World Optometry Day 2026. The program aimed to promote awareness about the importance of optometry and to encourage academic participation among students.
The event was inaugurated by Dr. Hemakanta Sarma, Principal of PIMC, in the presence of Dr. Amirul Hassan Barbhuiya, Principal of the School of Allied Medical Sciences, and Mr. Rakibul Hasan Khan, Coordinator of the Department of Optometry. The program was also graced by the honourable guest speaker Kishor Kumar Choudhury, along with respected faculty members and enthusiastic students.
As part of the program, a workshop was also arranged and conducted by the guest speaker, where students had the opportunity to gain practical knowledge and hands-on experience related to optometry practice.
In addition, a poster and model presentation competition was organized, and certificates were provided to the winners in recognition of their outstanding performance and creativity.
A short cultural program was also arranged to provide enjoyment and relaxation for the students, adding a vibrant and engaging element to the event.
World Optometry Day this year was celebrated under the theme âA Shared Vision: Collaboration in Global Eye Care,â which highlights the importance of cooperation among eye care professionals to improve vision care and promote eye health worldwide.
During the program, speakers highlighted the growing importance of optometry as a healthcare profession dedicated to primary eye care, vision correction, early detection of eye diseases, and improvement of visual performance. They also emphasized that optometry education equips students with both theoretical knowledge and clinical skills in areas such as refraction, contact lenses, binocular vision, low vision care, and community eye health.
