Celebrating Research and Innovation at SMST – Research Scholars' Day 2025

We are delighted to share that the Research Scholars' Day 2025 was successfully held on April 12, 2025, at the School of Medical Science and Technology (SMST). The day brought together scholars, researchers, and faculty to celebrate ongoing research and foster interdisciplinary dialogue.

The event began with a warm inaugural session, including a welcome address by the Chairman, SMST. It was followed by a series of thought-provoking plenary talks by distinguished speakers:

Prof. Suman Chakraborty: “Innovations in Affordable and Accessible Diagnostic Technologies for Resource-Limited Settings”

Dr. Soumendranath Ray: “Radionuclides in Medicine and Concept of Theranostics”

Prof. Sourav Ghosh: “Immune Responses to Cell Death and/or Damage”

Prof. Bhupendra Nath Dev: “Quantum Life: The Stride of Quantum Physics into Biology”

The day also featured a poster walk, a high-end instrument presentation, and engaging sessions such as a panel discussion on “Post PhD Opportunities” and a short segment on “Life Beyond Academics.” The event concluded with a closing ceremony and awards distribution, recognizing the outstanding contributions of our scholars.

A heartfelt thanks to all the speakers, participants, and organizers who made this event a resounding success. Moments like these reaffirm our commitment to advancing science through collaboration, curiosity, and creativity.

📝 Call for Abstracts – hashtag

The School of Medical Science and Technology, IIT Kharagpur, in collaboration with the Centre of Excellence in Affordable Healthcare, is organizing an International Conference on “Recent Advances in Medical Science and Technology” (hashtag ) from 17th–19th December 2025, commemorating 25 years of SMS&T. 🎉

We invite the hashtag (Biomedical Engineering) community and allied researchers to submit their 1-page extended abstracts by 30th April 2025 and join us in celebrating innovation in medical science and technology.

Effective April 1st, 2025, Prof. Mahitosh Mandal assumes the role of Chairman of SMST, succeeding Prof. Soumen Das.

The department acknowledges Prof. Das for his dedicated leadership over the past three years, during which he contributed significantly to the growth and development of SMST. His efforts have fostered an inclusive and progressive academic environment.

Prof. Das remains an integral part of the SMST community and will continue to be available for discussions and academic engagement. The department looks forward to the next phase of its journey under Prof. Mandal’s leadership.

🌟 Event Highlights: IEEE EMBS Distinguished Lecture 🌟

We successfully hosted the IEEE EMBS Distinguished Lecture on "Exploring Cardiovascular Mechanics with Ultrasound" by Prof. Spyretta Golemati, Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece.

The session offered valuable insights into cardiovascular mechanics, tissue motion, and the role of ultrasound technology in biomedical research. It was a privilege to learn from Prof. Golemati’s expertise.

📚 Academic Talk by Dr. Shinjini Kundu (13th Jan 2025):
The year began with a phenomenal talk by Dr. Shinjini Kundu, MD, PhD, Neuroradiologist, and Assistant Professor at Washington University in St. Louis. Her insights on "Beyond What the Eye Can See: Re-imagining Precision Medicine" were both thought-provoking and transformative.

We had an excellent SMST Demo Day 2024 (Day 1). The students, as well as the TAs, have worked extremely hard in the last month(s) to present unique projects ranging from a Spirometry system, Whole side imager, polarization microscopy for malaria detection, non-invasive hemoglobin estimator to fundus image segmentation tool, Virtual Stain Generator and so on. You may still visit us on Day 2 for repeat demos and more new stuff.

This exemplifies the incredible talent we hold in the School and the country and demonstrates how things can be achieved if there is a will and a solid team to back it up.

Kudos to our and students and the battery of TAs backing them up! We thank the faculty mentors and the school leadership for their sustained support and guidance.
