Gingivitis means inflammation of the gums (gingiva). It commonly occurs because of films of bacteria that accumulate on the teeth - plaque; this type is called plaque-induced gingivitis. Gingivitis is a non-destructive type of periodontal disease. If left untreated, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, which is more serious and can eventually lead to loss of teeth.

A patient with gingivitis will have red and puffy gums, and they will most likely bleed when they brush their teeth. Generally, gingivitis resolves with good oral hygiene - longer and more frequent brushing, as well as flossing. Some people find that using an antiseptic mouthwash, alongside proper tooth brushing and flossing also helps.

In mild cases of gingivitis, patients may not even know they have it, because symptoms are mild. However, the condition should be taken seriously and addressed immediately.

Tooth decay is the destruction of tooth structure and can affect both the enamel (the outer coating of the tooth) and the dentin layer of the tooth.

Tooth decay occurs when foods containing carbohydrates (sugars and starches), such as breads, cereals, milk, soda, fruits, cakes, or candy are left on the teeth. Bacteria that live in the mouth digest these foods, turning them into acids. The bacteria, acid, food debris, and saliva combine to form plaque, which clings to the teeth. The acids in plaque dissolve the enamel surface of the teeth, creating holes in the teeth called cavities.

Pericoronitis is inflammation of the tissue surrounding a third molar, otherwise known as a wisdom tooth. The condition most often occurs in molars that are partially impacted, or not fully visible. It’s also more common in lower molars than in the upper ones.

Most people with pericoronitis have a flap of gum tissue partially covering the crown of the erupting tooth.

Your doctor may recommend having the flap removed or extracting the tooth, based on a number of factors. Sometimes, only treating the actual symptoms is the best course of action.

Bad breath, medically called halitosis, can result from poor dental health habits and may be a sign of other health problems. Bad breath can also be made worse by the types of foods you eat and other unhealthy lifestyle habits.

Dental caries, often called cavities, are erosions of the surface of the tooth caused by the combined effects of bacteria, acids, plaque and tartar. Dental caries are common in both children and adults, and they occur most often as a result of poor dental hygiene. Dental caries are usually painless at first, but they may become painful if they spread to the nerve or root of a tooth. Left untreated, dental caries can progress to a tooth abscess, which is a more painful and potentially serious condition.

Dental caries are common, but they can often be prevented by practicing good dental hygiene, including regular brushing and flossing. Dental caries usually do not require emergency medical care unless they become painful, do not respond to over-the-counter pain relievers, or progress to a tooth abscess. Treatment includes removing the decayed material with a drill and filling in the resulting hole with a stable dental material.

A root canal is a treatment to repair and save a badly damaged or infected tooth. The procedure involves removing the damaged area of the tooth (the pulp), cleaning and disinfecting it and then filling and sealing it. The common causes affecting the pulp are a cracked tooth, a deep cavity, repeated dental treatment to the tooth or trauma. The term "root canal" comes from cleaning of the canals inside the tooth's root.

Gingival recession ( receding gums) is the
exposure in the roots of the teeth caused by a loss of
gum tissue and/or retraction of the gingival margin
from the crown of the teeth. [1] Gum recession is a
common problem in adults over the age of 40, but it
may also occur starting from the teens. It may exist
with or without concomitant decrease in crown-to-
root ratio (recession of alveolar bone ).
Causes
There are several possible causes for gingival
recession:
Grinding of the teeth ( bruxism )
Hereditary thin, fragile or insufficient gingival
tissue.
Inadequate brushing or flossing , which allows
bacteria to build up between the teeth, resulting in
enzymes eating the bone away from the
teeth

Saliva provides an essential defence against tooth decay and periodontal disease. Where there is insufficient saliva serious dental health problems can arise. Persistent dry mouth could be a symptom of a disease or a side effect of certain medicines. For dry mouth sufferers there are a number of highly effective products that either stimulate saliva production or replace it altoghter. xerostomia (dry mouth), a condition that affects approximately 20% of the population, arises when the salivary glands malfunction and fail to produce sufficient saliva. Saliva is a key facilitator of most oral functions, most notably speech, chewing and swallowing and as such dry mouth can have a significant impact on an individual’s quality of life. Treatment:- Sucking on sugar-free candy or chewing sugar-free gum
Drinking plenty of water to help keep your mouth moist
Protecting your teeth by brushing with a fluoridetoothpaste, using a fluoride rinse, and visiting your dentist regularly
Breathing through your nose, not your mouth, as much as possible
Using a room vaporizer to add moisture to the bedroom air
Using an over-the-counter artificial saliva substitute

Excessive x-rays emit harmful radiation that is known to cause birth defects, miscarriage and other health problems such as infertility and cancer. One study conducted by the University of Washington School of Dentistry in 2004 found that dental x-rays during pregnancy were associated with low-birth-weight.

Pregnant women should avoid x-rays where possible, including dental x-rays. It may also be prudent to avoid other appliances that emit radiation - such as computers, TV's and microwaves - although studies are yet to find links with poor pregnancy outcomes.
