“Passion: Live it, Love it, Own it“ is the first project of Let’s Put a Smile since its relaunch aimed at shedding light on unconventional career options that resonate well with students, but may not be something they thought they could pursue as a career option. In this series, we have a handful of personalities from different walks of life talking about their passion and how they found a career in them. This series aims at building more awareness about the importance of honing different skills and striving to be best at what we are good at.

Hi everyone!

Abhilash (S/O Raghavan), lives with his wife and two children in Mathilakom. Their older daughter NANDU (9 YEARS) suffered from cold and fever often but felt better once she was administered medicines. Recently, due to breathing trouble, she was admitted to a hospital in Kodungallur and was later transferred to Jubilee Mission Hospital in Thrissur and was admitted for a month. But she did not get better. Her lungs was completely infected by then. It was later found that she is suffering from TUBERCULOSIS. She is currently admitted in Aster Medicity in Kochi. She has to be kept in the ICU for A MONTH to bring her back to a proper breathing pattern by administering oxygen to the body and removing the infection. She was further diagnosed with a HEART PROBLEM and was moved to Medical College due to lack of funds. They still have to buy some medicines from outside as she doesn't weigh enough for her age and she can't be given normal dosages. Her father, Abhilash, is a stonemason and has already exhausted all his savings. They live in a rented house and don't have anyone to turn to.

SHE CAN BE TREATED FOR THE HEART DISEASE ONLY AFTER THE TREATMENT FOR TUBERCULOSIS IS SUCCESSFUL.

Kindly help them save their daughter's life.

Let's Put a Smile recently visited a facility for physically disabled (almost entirely bedridden) patients in Mulamkunnathkavu, Thrissur. PEACE HOMES is 3 decades old and is run by few nuns along with some helpers, who happen to be some of the kindest people we have come across in life. There are about a hundred patients, from a 2 year old child to an elderly person in his 60s. The patients were either bedridden since birth due to diseases like polio or due to accidents. They are looked after by the nuns and helpers and they were more than happy to have us there. We happened to meet a 35 year old patient who recently completed his 10th SSLC Examination. He was truly inspiring. A visit to the facility changed our perspective towards life and taught us to be grateful for our lives.

Let's Put a Smile plans to visit PEACE HOMES on 23rd July. Everyone is welcome to join us. We accept donations which include the following items (these are the items they requested):
Cleaning items
Adult diapers
Scent
Air freshner
Soap
Scented powder
Cleaning broomstick
Grocery items
Etc.

Hello All!

Today I'm going to tell you the story of an inspiring man called Anshu Gupta. He's an Indian social entrepreneur and he is the founder of an organization called *Goonj*.
Goonj was started in 1999 and emphasizes on the importance of under-utilised urban material as a resource for rural areas.
Some of the projects undertaken by Goonj include,

*Cloth for Work*: Under this initiative, Goonj works with partners and communities to identify infrastructural improvements that need to be undertaken in the villages. Villagers then work to dig wells, clean ponds, repair roads, and build schools in the community using local resources, for which they are compensated with material resources like clothing, utensils, furniture etc.

*Not just a piece of cloth*: This initiative was started after the 2004 tsunami when trucks of cloth was on the streets as waste. The unwearable cloth from this lot was turned into cloth pads which later came to be called MY Pads. They started providing these affordable (Rs.5 for a pack of five sanitary napkins) easy-to-use clean cloth napkin made out of waste cloth for women in villages and slums.

Inspiring, or what? Let me not drone on.

If you want to learn more about Goonj, visit their website www.goonj.org

Or you can watch Anshu Gupta's TED talk here

Goonj is initiating a collection drive from 22nd of April to the 30th of April. So we are planning to have a drive from the entire CUSAT campus. Please do donate your old clothes, blankets, woolens, Utensils, Footwear etc. and let's make sure it's used for a good cause. Contact any one of the tagged LPS members for more details. :)

WE'RE TURNING ONE TODAY!

Let's Put A Smile was officially conceived on this day a year ago. One year of spreading smiles later, we must say, it has been the most satisfying year of our lives. We've come a full circle and celebrated our birthday with the kids of Santhwanam Home, Trikkakara (where we had our first event)

Thanks for being a part of our journey. Looking forward to being the reason behind infinite more smiles. We love you.
