Our Story

EXCEPTIONAL TECHNOLOGY, COMPASSIONATE CARE. Amrita Hospitals are recognised as one of the premier hospitals in South Asia.

In the twenty short years since its inception, Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences (Amrita Hospital) has grown from a 115 bed specialty hospital to a 1300 bed super-specialty tertiary care health centre with an attached medical college hospital. On the 17th of May 1998, Amrita Hospital was inaugurated by the then Prime Minister of India, Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee, in the presence of Her Holiness, Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi.

With extensive facilities comprising 28 modern operating theatres, 275 equipped intensive-care beds, a fully computerized and networked Hospital Information System (HIS), a fully digital radiology department, 17 NABL accredited clinical laboratories and a 24/7 telemedicine service, Amrita Hospital offers a total and comprehensive health solution comparable to the best hospitals in the world. There are 12 superspecialty departments, 45 other departments, 4500 support staff and 670 faculty members. The hospital is using fully digital imaging services, and is the first institution in South East Asia to do this.

The Amrita Hospital team comprises physicians, surgeons and other healthcare professionals of the highest caliber and experience. Amrita Hospital features one of the most advanced hospital computer networks in India. It owns a fully integrated health care delivery system. Another unique feature is the teleconnectivity, which connects sixty Centres in India and nine international centres. A PET (Positron Emitting Tomography) CT scanner, the first of its kind in the state of Kerala and which is extremely useful for early detection of cancer, has been installed in Amrita Hospital and was inaugurated in July 2009 by Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, the former President of India. The most recent additions are the DA VINCI SURGICAL ROBOTIC SYSTEM; ROSA, the latest generation in robotic neurosurgery assistance; the MAKO ROBOTIC-ARM ASSISTED TECHNOLOGY which is transforming the way joint replacement surgeries are being performed; a CyberKnife M6 and Tomotherapy for the most precise radiotherapy available today; the GE Voluson E10 4D ultrasound system for spectacular 2D and 3D/4D images; a Philips 256 slice iCT scanner; a PET-3Tesla MRI scanner which is extremely useful for early detection of cancer; and the Digital Pathology Solution, a virtual microscope which digitizes lab slides which more accurately help clinicians in better, faster, cheaper diagnosis and prediction of diseases.
